Andy Dougall
Andrew William Dougall (22 May 1884 – 11 November 1941) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Change of name He enlisted in the first AIF under the name of James Davidson (the reason for this decision has never been explained); and, it seems, he went under that name for the rest of his life. Family The son of Scottish migrants, William Dougall (1855-1929) and Mary Dougall (1856-1904), née Mitchell, he was born in Melbourne on 22 May 1884. He married Rita Isobel Ridley (1894-), née Law (under the name "Andrew William Dougall") in South Australia in 1931. One brother, Lieutenant Norman Dougall (1887-1917) — who attended Geelong College (1898-1902), and served in the First AIF, was also awarded the Military Cross in 1917 ("for conspicuus gallantry and devotion to duty") — was killed in action at Bullecourt on 6 May 1917. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land" to all members of the British Armed Forces of any rank. In 1979, the Queen approved a proposal that a number of awards, including the Military Cross, could be recommended posthumously. Hilton, South Australia
Hilton is an inner western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of West Torrens, for which it is the council seat. History The Kaurna people occupied the land of the present suburb, before British colonisation of South Australia in 1836. The land now covering the suburb of Hilton was received by Matthew Davenport Hill in 1839. About ten years later, The "Village of Hilton" was laid out by his attorney, George Milner Stephen. Coburg Harriers is an athletics club located in Coburg, in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. The club is based at the Harold Stevens Athletics Track. History The club was founded in 1896. The first general meeting of the club was held at the Public Hall in Coburg on Monday, 30 March 1896. The club affiliated with the Victorian Amateur Athletics Association (VAAA) on 13 May 1896. The first official uniform was all white, with royal blue facings and a royal blue capital C on the front. The club was located in a shed at the rear of the Corner Hotel, on the corner of Bell Street and Sydney Road, Coburg. The first competitive event that Coburg Harriers participated in was on 20 September 1896 in the Victorian 10 mile Cross Country Championship where the Club finished 11th. 1902 VFL Season
The 1902 VFL season was the sixth season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 3 May until 20 September, and comprised a 17-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Collingwood Football Club for the first time, after it defeated by 33 points in the 1902 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1902, the VFL competition consisted of eight teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match.
