Andre Compton
Andre Neil Compton (born 15 May 1977 in Dewsbury, England) is a speedway rider. He is the older brother of Benji Compton. Career summary In 2004, Compton's form led to a call up from Elite League side Poole Pirates. This was also the year in which Compton became Premier League Riders Champion. He passed the unbeaten Simon Stead in the final, and both riders fell on the last turn, giving both riders multiple injuries. The race was awarded and Compton managed to take his place on the rostrum as winner. In 2006, Compton became the captain of the Sheffield Tigers following the retirement of Sean Wilson. It was a successful season for the Tigers who finished second in the Premier League and gained a place in the Premier League play-off final, which was won by the King's Lynn Stars. Compton tore ligaments in his shoulder while riding in Sweden in August, just before the Premier Trophy Final, which they consequently lost to King's Lynn Stars. Dewsbury
Dewsbury is a minster and market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Calder and on an arm of the Calder and Hebble Navigation waterway. It is to the west of Wakefield, east of Huddersfield and south of Leeds. Premier League Riders' Championship
The Premier League Riders Championship was a contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average points total from each club competing in the Premier League in the United Kingdom. The championship was inaugurated in 1995, the same year that the Premier League was formed. For its first two years, the Premier League was the top league in Britain. British Speedway Promoters' Association
The British Speedway Promoters Limited (BSPL) organises the domestic motorcycle speedway competitions in the United Kingdom. They are also responsible for the promotion and running of the FIM meetings staged in Britain. Each club has a promoter in the association, although promotions under three years of membership do not have a vote. A ''Management Committee'' is elected at the Annual General Meeting, and this committee is responsible for the day-to-day running of British speedway. All the promoters meet periodically to discuss matters of importance, usually rule changes. King's Lynn Stars
King's Lynn Stars are a motorcycle speedway team who compete in the SGB Premiership. The nickname "Stars" comes from the defunct Norwich Stars team. The team was founded in 1965 and has been running continually since then, except for 1996 when King's Lynn failed to have a team competing in the British league system. History 1966–1995 The team's inaugural season was the 1966 British League season, where they finished 16th. They managed to finish in third place during the 1972 and 1973 seasons with their strongest riders being Terry Betts and Malcolm Simmons. The first silverware won by the team was the Knockout Cup in 1977. They won the final by the small margin of two points on aggregate, thanks largely to Michael Lee and Betts. The team continued to compete in the highest division until the end of the 1995 season but failed to finish any higher than 4th place. Sean Wilson (born 7 November 1969 in York, England)Oakes, P.(2004). ''British Speedway Who's Who''. is a former international speedway rider who has ridden for Great Britain at test level. Career summary Wilson had a career spanning 20 years, starting and finishing at Sheffield. He became Premier League Riders Champion three times. His career ended early due to a number of injuries. In 2004 whilst riding in Joe Screen's testimonial at Belle Vue he crushed the C7 vertebrate in his neck leaving him in a neck brace for several months. He returned in 2005 but suffered a dislocated shoulder and a fractured humerus. He was subsequently, much to his disappointment, released at the end of 2005 which triggered a retirement. Simon Stead
Simon Trevor Stead (born 25 April 1982) is a British speedway team manager and former rider. Career Summary Born in Sheffield, Stead started his career at local track Sheffield Tigers before riding for Buxton Hitmen, Peterborough Panthers and Workington Comets. Stead signed for Belle Vue Aces prior to the start of the 2005 season and had three seasons with the club. In those three seasons he progressed from a reserve to a heat leader. For the 2008 season Stead joined the Coventry Bees on loan. In 2009 he signed a contract which involved him moving from Coventry to the Swindon Robins. He re-signed with Sheffield Tigers in 2013 with the option of doubling up with King's Lynn Stars, his season was cut short by a broken leg sustained while practising in June, and signed for Sheffield Tigers again in 2014 doubling up with Leicester Lions. Elite League (speedway)
The Elite League was the top division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom, governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). It was sponsored by Sky Sports until the end of the 2013 season. In 2016, the Elite League featured 8 teams, unlike 10 in 2014, during a season which ran between March and October. Each team had a designated race day on which they normally staged their home fixtures, and they regularly had home and away fixtures scheduled in the same week. Benji Compton
Benjamin Mark "Benji" Compton (born 17 September 1986, in Playa de las Américas, Tenerife) is a Spanish-British motorcycle speedway rider. Career Compton has ridden for Buxton Hitmen in 2004, Scunthorpe Scorpions in 2005, Sheffield Tigers in 2006 as well as Berwick Bandits and King's Lynn Stars in 2007. He won the Premier Trophy in 2007 while riding for King's Lynn. His parent club is Sheffield Tigers who in 2008 granted him permission to ride for Scunthorpe Scorpions who had moved up to the Premier League from the Conference League. Compton had ridden for Scunthorpe in the Conference League from 2005 to 2007. In May 2008, however, it was revealed that Compton would be leaving Scunthorpe as part of team strengthening.
