Anatopia
Anatopia was a land squat near to Papenburg, in the north west of Germany from 1991 until 1995. An anatopism is something that is out of its proper place. Similar protest occupations included Runway 18 West and the Free Republic of Wendland. Occupation The site was squatted on 4 July, 1991, as an environmental protest action. Local people were concerned for the rare plants and animals, since the Daimler-Benz automobile company (Mercedes-Benz) intended to build a test track (12 km long, 3 km wide). The squatters lived off-the-grid without running water and heating with woodstoves. There was an infoshop and small-scale agriculture. Squatting
Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. The United Nations estimated in 2003 that there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Squatting occurs worldwide and tends to occur when people who are poor and homeless find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. It has a long history, broken down by country below. In developing countries and least developed countries, shanty towns often begin as squatted settlements. In African cities such as Lagos much of the population lives in slums. An anatopism (from the Ancient Greek , "against," and , "place") is something that is out of its proper place. The concept of anatopism is less widely familiar than that of anachronism, perhaps because much that is anatopic is also anachronistic. Yet the distinction is a valid one; not all that is anatopic is necessarily also anachronistic. Occupation (protest)
As an act of protest, occupation is a strategy often used by social movements and other forms of collective social action in order to squat and hold public and symbolic spaces, buildings, critical infrastructure such as entrances to train stations, shopping centers, university buildings, squares, and parks. Opposed to a military occupation which attempts to subdue a conquered country, a protest occupation is a means to resist the status quo and advocate a change in public policy. The Free Republic of Wendland (from German ''Republik Freies Wendland'') was a protest camp established in Gorleben, West Germany, on 3 May 1980 to protest against the establishment of a nuclear waste dump there. On 4 June 1980, the police moved in and evicted the camp.
