Amritsar Train Disaster
On 19 October 2018, two Indian Railways passenger trains rode into a crowd of people in the eastern outskirts of Amritsar, Punjab. The crowd had gathered to watch celebrations for the Hindu festival of Dussehra and were standing on the tracks. The accident occurred in the early evening, killing at least 59 people and injuring approximately an additional 100. Incident According to local police and news media, the spectators were standing and sitting on or near the tracks in the Joda Phatak area in the outskirts of Amritsar. The spectators were watching the burning of an effigy of Ravana as part of the Dussehra festival, when a commuter train ran into the crowd.
