There is a community of Americans living in Argentina consisting of immigrants and expatriates from the United States as well as their local born descendants. There are roughly about 60,000 Americans living in the country, and 26,000 of them live in the capital city, Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires ( or ; ), officially the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires ( es, link=no, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires), is the capital and primate city of Argentina. The city is located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, on South America's southeastern coast. Richard Shindell
Richard Shindell (born August 3, 1960) is an American folk singer, songwriter, producer, and musician. Shindell grew up in Port Washington, New York, and now lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with his wife, Lila Caimari, a university professor, and their children. Shindell's career received a boost in 1997 when Joan Baez recorded three of his songs ("Fishing", "Reunion Hill", and "Money for Floods") for her album ''Gone from Danger'' and invited the aspiring singer-songwriter to join her 1997–98 tour. Shindell collaborated with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky to form the group Cry Cry Cry. On their eponymous 1998 album, Cry Cry Cry covered an eclectic mix of songwriters. The trio toured in support of their album before resuming solo careers. In 2017-2018 the group reunited briefly. Tren A Las Nubes
The Tren a las Nubes ( en, Train to the Clouds) is a tourist train service in Salta Province, Argentina. The service runs along the eastern part of the Salta–Antofagasta railway line of the Belgrano Railway (also known as the "C-14" line) that connects the Argentine Northwest with the border in the Andes mountain range, over above mean sea level, the fifth highest railway in the world. Originally built for economic and social reasons, it is now primarily of interest to tourists as a heritage railway, though cheaper tickets are also available for locals to use the train as transport. Overview The railway line has 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 spirals and 2 zigzags. Because of the design decision not to use a rack-and-pinion for traction, the route had to be designed to avoid steep grades. Richard Maury
Richard Fontaine Maury (Philadelphia, 18 December 1882 – Córdoba, 10 July 1950) was an American railway engineer and naturalized Argentine. He became known for the project of the Argentine "Ramal C-14" of the Ferrocarril General Manuel Belgrano and the touristic '' Tren a las Nubes''. Early life Richard Maury was born in Philadelphia in 1882, as the second of four brothers. He was the son of Thompson Brooke Maury. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute as an engineer in 1902. His first work was on the Pennsylvania Tunnel New York City-New Jersey. Career In 1906 he arrived in Argentina to join in 1907 the ''Argentine State Railway'', the national railway company of the country. Renato Corsi
Renato Corsi (born January 24, 1963 in Manhattan, New York, United States) is a retired American-Argentine footballer. He was the first American to play in the Primera División Argentina. Corsi rose to fame as part of the Argentinos Juniors team of the early 1980s that won back-to-back championships in the Metropolitano 1984 and the Nacional 1985. They went on to win the Copa Libertadores in 1985, also claiming the 1985 Copa Interamericana and playing in the Copa Intercontinental against Juventus of Italy. Later in his career, Corsi played for a number of other clubs in Argentina including Instituto de Córdoba, Deportivo Armenio, Club Atlético Atlanta and Deportivo Morón. Hesperidina
Hesperidina is a classic Argentine apéritif made from bitter and sweet orange peels, which contain a high number of flavonoids. The beverage has antioxidant effects because of the flavonoids. Its name was taken from the Greek myth of Hesperides. The Hesperidina was invented by Melville Sewell Bagley and manufactured by the company established by him, Bagley Argentina. Since Bagley ceased production of Hesperidina, the apéritif has been produced by other brands, such as Tres Blasones and more recently, Grupo Cepas, which acquired the brand in 2018. Maxine Swann (born February 11, 1969) is an American fiction author. Life Swann grew up on a farm in southern Pennsylvania, before attending Phillips Academy and then Columbia College, where she studied Comparative Literature (French and German) and creative writing with Mary Gordon, graduating in 1994. She pursued her graduate studies at the Sorbonne, Université de Paris VII, earning her master's degree in 1997 with a thesis on the style of Marcel Proust. She now lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Kevin Johansen (born 21 June 1964) is an US-born Argentine musician and singer-songwriter. He is known for mixing several rhythms and languages in his musical work. Biography Kevin Johansen was born on June 21, 1964 in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Marta Gloria Calvet and Kent Johansen. Marta Calvet was an Argentine feminist and polyglot; she met Kent Johansen while studying in Denver. They moved to Alaska and lived there until Kevin was 5 years old.
