Amalia Molina (Seville, 1881 - Barcelona, July 8, 1956) was a popular Spanish tonadillera and dancer. Raised in Triana, she moved at a young age to Madrid, where she debuted at the age of 17. Her career took her to Latin America and even Broadway. In Paris she premiered in the opera, ''Goyescas''. She starred in the film, '' Malvaloca'' (1926). Tonadilla
Tonadilla was a Spanish musical song form of theatrical origin; not danced. The genre was a type of short, satirical musical comedy popular in 18th-century Spain, and later in Cuba and other Spanish colonial countries. It originated as a song type, then dialogue for characters was written into the tonadilla, and it expanded into a miniature opera lasting from 10 to 20 minutes. It drew its personages from everyday life and included popular and folk music and dance, and vernacular language. The tonadilla also influenced the development of the zarzuela, the characteristic form of Spanish musical drama or comedy. The first tonadilla is ascribed to Luis Misón in 1757. Notable composers of tonadillas in Spain included Blas de Laserna, Pablo Esteve, and Jacinto Valledor. Triana is a neighbourhood and administrative district on the west bank of the Guadalquivir River in the city of Seville, Spain. Like other neighborhoods that were historically separated from the main city, it was known as an ''arrabal''. ''Goyescas'' is an opera in one act and three tableaux, written in 1915 by the Spanish composer Enrique Granados. Granados composed the opera to a Spanish libretto by Fernando Periquet y Zuaznabar with melodies taken from his 1911 piano suite, which was also called '' Goyescas''. The opera was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on January 28, 1916. Performance history Prevented by World War I from being presented at the Paris Opéra, the premiere of ''Goyescas'' took place on January 28, 1916 at the Metropolitan Opera. It was the first opera to be performed there in Spanish. Paired on a double bill with Leoncavallo's '' Pagliacci'', the opera's cast included the leading artists Giovanni Martinelli and Giuseppe De Luca. The stage production was directed by Jules Speck.
