Alma, New South Wales
South Broken Hill is a suburb of the western New South Wales city of Broken Hill in outback Australia. The suburb is located in the City of Broken Hill local government area, separated by the "Line of Lode" from the rest of the city. The Silver City Highway running to Wentworth runs through the suburb. The suburb was previously known as Alma, which gave its name to the electoral district of Alma from 1894 to 1904. Broken Hill, New South Wales
Broken Hill is an inland mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia. It is near the border with South Australia on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (A32) and the Silver City Highway (B79), in the Barrier Range. It is 315m above sea level, with a hot desert climate, and an average rainfall of 235mm. The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500km to the southwest and linked via route A32. The town is prominent in Australia's mining, industrial relations and economic history after the discovery of silver ore led to the opening of various mines, thus establishing Broken Hill's recognition as a prosperous mining town well into the 1990s. Murray (The Murray until 1910) is an electoral district in the Australian state of New South Wales. Murray is a regional electorate lying in the southwestern corner of the state. Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. The Outback is a remote, vast, sparsely populated area of Australia. The Outback is more remote than the bush. The City of Broken Hill is a local government area in the Far West region of New South Wales, Australia. The area contains an isolated mining city, Broken Hill, located in the outback of New South Wales and is surrounded by the Unincorporated Far West Region. The city is located adjacent to the Silver City and Barrier Highways and the Broken Hill railway line. The Mayor of the City of Broken Hill Council is Cr. Tom Kennedy, an independent politician. Council history Following a petition submitted by residents to the Colonial Secretary on 2 May 1888, the Municipal District of Broken Hill was first incorporated on 22 September 1888. The incorporation occurred during a typhoid epidemic, which killed 128 people, and the need for public health and water supply provisions was one of the main driving forces behind incorporation, and one of the biggest issues for the new municipality. Silver City Highway
Silver City Highway is a highway that links Buronga, New South Wales to the Queensland border via Wentworth, Broken Hill, and Tibooburra, in the arid Far West region of New South Wales; a short branch also connects to Calder Highway on the Victorian border at Curlwaa (signed as Calder Highway). Parts of the highway north of Tibooburra are unsealed. The namesake of the highway is derived from the moniker for Broken Hill - the "Silver City" - which the highway travels through. The highway is designated route B79 from Broken Hill to Buronga. Route The route passes through largely arid terrain, although there are multiple irrigated areas between Buronga and Wentworth in the highway's south. Alma was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales from 1894 to 1904, named after Alma, a locality in southern Broken Hill, now known as South Broken Hill. Members for Alma Josiah Thomas easily won the seat for at the 1894 election, was elected unopposed following year and increased his majority at the 1898 election. Thomas entered federal politics by the winning the seat of Barrier at the first Commonwealth election. William Williams succeeded Thomas after narrowing defeating Jabez Wright in the 1901 election.
