Allmand 31
The Allmand 31 is an American sailboat that was designed by Walter Scott as a cruiser and first built in 1978.Sherwood, Richard M.: ''A Field Guide to Sailboats of North America, Second Edition'', pages 376-377. Houghton Mifflin Company, 1994. The Allmand 31 design was originally marketed as the Sail 31 and was later sold as the Allmand 312, with the same deck and hull, but a different interior layout. Production The design was built by Allmand Boats in Hialeah, Florida, United States from 1978 to 1985, but it is now out of production. Design The Allmand 31 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. The deck has an end-grain balsa core. It has a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars, a raked stem, a near-vertical transom, a skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a wheel and a short fixed fin keel. Transom (nautical)
A transom is the vertical reinforcement which strengthens the stern of a boat. This flat termination of the stern is typically above the waterline. The term was used as far back as Middle English in the 1300s, having come from Latin ''transversus'' (transverse) via Old French ''traversain'' (set crosswise). The stern of a boat is typically vertical. It can be raked such that there is an overhang above the water, as at the bow. A reverse transom is angled from the waterline forwards. Transoms can be used to support a rudder, outboard motor, or as a swimming and access platform. Portsmouth Yardstick
The Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) or Portsmouth handicap scheme is a term used for a number of related systems of empirical handicapping used primarily in small sailboat racing. The handicap is applied to the time taken to sail any course, and the handicaps can be used with widely differing types of sailboats. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship.
