Alice Rey Colaço
Alice Schmidt Constant Lafourcade Rey Colaço (Lisbon, 11 July 1890 — Lisbon, 13 June 1978) was a Portuguese painter, modernist illustrator, lyric singer, set designer and costume designer. Biography Alice Rey Colaço belonged to a cultured and respected family that could afford a great artistic and cultural education for their children. Her sister, Amélia Rey Colaço, was one of the leading Portuguese theatre actors of the first half of the 20th century. Alice started showing her work together with her friend and artist Mily Possoz in 1913, presenting in Porto and Lisbon. From 1918 she focused on illustration and collaborated with writers such as João Correia d'Óliveira, João Correia d'Oliveira, Francisco Adolfo Coelho, Adolfo Coelho, Maria da Luz Sobral and Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcelos, Carolina Michaëlis de Vasconcellos. The ''Teatro Nacional de São Carlos'' () (''National Theatre of Saint Charles'') is an opera house in Lisbon, Portugal. It was opened on June 30, 1793 by Queen Maria I as a replacement for the Tejo Opera House, which was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The theatre is located in the historical center of Lisbon, in the Chiado district. History In 1792, a group of Lisbon businessmen decided to finance the construction of a new Opera House in the city. The theatre was built in only six months following a design by Portuguese architect José da Costa e Silva, with neoclassical and rococo elements. Maria Adelaide Lima Cruz was a Portuguese painter, illustrator, set designer and costume designer. Early life Maria Adelaide de Lima Cruz (19081985) was born into a family of painters and musicians, being the daughter of the painter and piano teacher, Adelaide Lima Cruz (18781963), and sister of the musicologist, Maria Antonieta Lima Cruz. Starting to draw at a young age, and becoming a pupil of Carlos Reis, she did not follow any academic training. Artistic career Lima Cruz started illustrating professionally in 1921 at the age of 12 for the magazine ''Ilustração Portuguesa''. She first exhibited her art in 1921 in an exhibition with her mother who contributed only two paintings. She would go on to have around 40 individual exhibitions in Portugal and France, spending some time in Paris in 1934 under a government scholarship.
