Alexander J. Foley
Sergeant Alexander Joseph Foley (February 19, 1866 – January 14, 1910) was a member of the United States Marine Corps who was awarded the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for having distinguished himself during the Boxer Rebellion. Early years Foley was born in Heckscherville, Pennsylvania to Irish diaspora, Irish immigrants, Edward and Catherine McDonald Foley. At a young age he decided that he was not going to work the Coal Region, coal mines as his father had done. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1888 for a period of five years. In 1893, he re-enlisted and, in 1898, he was sent to Cuba during the Spanish–American War where he received his first taste of military action. Heckscherville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 220 at the 2010 census. Geography Heckscherville is located at (40.720951, -76.266458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Heckscherville Valley includes all of Foster Township, a small portion of New Castle Township and a large part of Cass Township. The Valley is situated between Broad Mountain on the north and the Thomaston / Mine Hill on the west. Clarence E. Mathias (December 12, 1876 – December 9, 1935) was an American Sergeant Major serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Mathias was born December 12, 1876, in Royalton, Pennsylvania, and after entering the Marine Corps he was sent as a private to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. He died December 9, 1935, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. James Cooney (July 27, 1860 – March 14, 1903) was an Irishman serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Cooney was born July 27, 1860, in Limerick, Ireland, and enlisted into the Marine Corps August 19, 1889. After entering the Marine Corps he was sent to fight in the Chinese Boxer Rebellion. He received his Medal for his actions in Tianjin, China July 13, 1900. The Medal was presented to him January 24, 1902. He died March 14, 1903, in Vallejo, California. Harry Chapman Adriance (October 27, 1864 – January 25, 1934) was a United States marine who received the Medal of Honor for his "distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in battle near Tientsin, China" on July 13, 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion. Biography Adriance was born on October 27, 1864, in Oswego, New York. At the age of 33, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 15, 1898. He served at Marine Barracks, New York Navy Yard, and then was transferred to the U.S. Naval Base, Cavite, Philippine Islands, arriving there on September 21, 1899. He was among the marines sent to the city of Tientsin on June 29, 1900, at the outbreak of hostilities by the Boxers in China. Clarence Edwin Sutton (February 18, 1871 – October 9, 1916) was a United States Marine Corps sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Boxer Rebellion. Biography Sutton was born in Urbanna, Virginia, on February 18, 1871, the oldest of four children of Thomas E. and Ellen Sutton. His father Thomas worked as a merchant. Sutton entered the Virginia Military Institute on August 18, 1885. He was forced to repeat his first year there, becoming a member of the class of 1890, and resigned from the school in 1888 before graduating. Sutton joined the Marine Corps from Washington, D.C. in June 1899, and served in the Philippine–American War. By July 13, 1900, he had reached the rank of sergeant and was serving in Tianjin (then known to Americans as "Tientsin"), China, in the midst of the Boxer Rebellion.
