Alex Stein
Alex Stein (; born 27 October 1957) is an Israeli jurist who currently serves as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Israel and a former law professor. Early life and education Stein was born to a Jewish family in the Soviet Union and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1973. He completed his high school studies at the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, and was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in 1976, serving in the C4I Corps. He participated in Operation Litani and the 1982 Lebanon War. After being discharged, he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earning an LLB in 1983 and an LLM in 1987. He later studied at University College London and earned PhD in law from the University of London in 1990. Military Advocate General
The Military Advocate General (MAG Corps') ( he, הפרקליטות הצבאית, ''HaParklitut HaTzva'it'') is responsible for implementing the rule of law within the Israel Defense Forces. The unit's objectives include integrating the rule of law amongst IDF commanders and soldiers; providing commanders with the tools for the effective performance of their missions in accordance with the law; and working with the IDF to achieve its goals on all legal fronts. The MAG Corps' has the ability to provide legal advice in emergencies and during warfare. The Military Advocate General's Corps (MAG Corps) was founded prior to the establishment of the State of Israel as the "Legal Service" within "Haganah" (the quasi-military body of the Jewish community and Zionist Movement in the British mandate prior to the establishment of the State of Israel). Uri Shoham
Uri Shoham ( he, אורי שהם; August 3, 1948) is a judge on the Supreme Court of Israel. He previously served as a district court judge in Tel-Aviv and a Judge Advocate General. His appointment to the court was viewed as a victory for Mizrahi Jews, as the court had consisted largely of judges of Ashkenazi descent. Shoham was born in Iraq on 3 August 1948 and moved to Israel with his family in 1951. He grew up in Tel Aviv and attended the Ironi Dalet High School. In 1966, he began his military service in the Israel Defense Forces as part of the Atuda program, serving in the Combat Engineering Corps. In 1971, he received a BA in law from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and received a law license in 1975. In 1977, he received a master's degree in law from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Judicial Selection Committee (Israel)
The Israeli Judicial Selection Committee ( he, הוועדה לבחירת שופטים, hava'ada livchirat shoftim) is the body that appoints judges to Israeli courts. The committee was established in 1953, following the enactment of the Judges Bill. The founding of the committee was intended to prevent outside political pressure, and so ensure the independence of the judges. Appointment of judges before the committee's establishment Until the enactment of the Judges Bill, the Justice Minister appointed the judges. Only the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court needed approval of the Cabinet and the Knesset. When the State of Israel was established, the British judges appointed by the Mandate government left the country, but in most courts the Jewish judges remained, allowing the continued operation of the courts following the Declaration of Independence.
