Aleksandr Vasilyev (hurdler)
Aleksandr Vasilyev (russian: Александр Васильев; born 26 July 1961) is a Belarusian former track and field hurdler who competed in the 400 metres hurdles for the Soviet Union. He set his lifetime best of 47.92 seconds for the event in Moscow in 1985. This remains the Belarusian national record. Vasilyev established himself with a gold medal at the Friendship Games in 1984. A slew of silver medals followed at the 1985 European Cup, 1985 IAAF World Cup, 1986 European Athletics Championships, and the 1986 Goodwill Games. He won four consecutive national title at the Soviet Athletics Championships from 1985 to 1988. He ranked as Europe's second best 400 m hurdler in 1984, 1985 and 1986, behind only Harald Schmid. Harald Schmid
Harald Schmid (; born 29 September 1957) is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the sprints and hurdles. He was one of the best 400 metres hurdles runners in the world during his career. Career Schmid won bronze with the West German 4 × 400 m relay team at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal as well as an individual bronze in the 400 m hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984. In addition, he won silver at the 1983 World Championships in the 400 m hurdles and the 4 × 400 m relay and a further bronze in 400 m hurdles at the 1987 World Championships. At the latter, he finished only 0.02 s behind the gold medalist Edwin Moses; Schmid's duels with Moses during the late 1970s and early 1980s were famous and Schmid was the last person to beat Moses before his streak of 122 consecutive victories. These are the official results of the Men's 400 metres Hurdles event at the 1987 IAAF World Championships in Rome, Italy. There were a total number of 47 participating athletes, with six qualifying heats, two semi-finals and the final held on Tuesday 1987-09-01. Summary After 122 consecutive victories, Edwin Moses's winning streak was finally broken in June by Danny Harris. Harris was in lane 5, while Moses was in lane three. Between them was Harald Schmid, the man who had last beaten Moses at the beginning of the streak. Surrounding them were the usual suspects of 1980's long hurdling. These are the official results of the athletics competition at the 1986 Goodwill Games which took place between July 5 and 9, 1986, at the Moscow Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union. Most of the running events had so many entrants that several heats had to be held with the combined results deciding on the medals (the sole exception was women's 100 metres hurdles where both heats and the final were held). This caused some controversy as the Soviets entered some of their better athletes in a theoretically weaker heat, possibly to avoid direct competition with the best rivals.
