Albert Howcroft
Albert Howcroft (27 December 1882 – 7 March 1955) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1908 and 1910. Howcroft was born in Cliffe, Yorkshire. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season, in May against Surrey, when he scored 19 during the second innings, having been caught out in the first. His second appearance came a week later against Sussex, but he made little impact. He next played for Derbyshire in the 1910 season, playing two games. His final first-class game was against Leicestershire when Ernest Needham and Leonard Oliver both scored first-innings centuries for a Derbyshire victory. Howcroft was a left-handed lower-order batsman and played 8 innings in four first-class matches. His best score was his debut 19 and his average 5.75. Cliffe, Selby
Cliffe is a small village and civil parish in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England. It was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. The civil parish includes the villages of Cliffe Common, South Duffield, Lund, and Newhay. The site of the former Selby Coalfield ''Whitemoor mine'' in the north of the parish is now a business park. Ernest Needham
Ernest Needham (21 January 1873 – 8 March 1936) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played in sixteen international football matches for England and captained the side in 1901. He was an outstanding left half who played for Sheffield United from 1891 until 1910. He was instrumental in their promotion campaign of 1892–93 and then captained their team from 1895 to 1905. Under his captaincy, United won the Football League First Division in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899 and 1902. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1901 to 1912. Leonard Oliver (cricketer)
Leonard Oliver (18 October 1886 – 22 January 1948) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1908 and 1924. Oliver was born at Glossop, Derbyshire. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season in a drawn match against Lancashire. In his first three years he scored moderately and was frequently caught out. He achieved his first century 104 not out against Leicestershire in the 1910 season. In the 1911 season his average almost doubled and he scored a century against Hampshire. In the following three years he maintained his form, scoring centuries against Warwickshire in the 1913 season and becoming the club's top scorer that year. He scored a century against Northamptonshire in the 1914 season. Cricket was then suspended during the First World War. In the 1919 season he played to his pre-war standard and was top scorer for the county again. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1910 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty nine years. It was their sixteenth season in the County Championship and they won two matches to finish fifteenth in the Championship table. 1910 season Derbyshire played twenty two matches, all in the County Championship and won two and lost fourteen. Their two victories were courtesy of Leicestershire. John Chapman was in his first year as captain. Ernest Needham scored most runs, and Arthur Morton took most wickets. Among the draws, the season produced one of the most memorable matches against Warwickshire at Blackwell in 1910 and not just a Derbyshire record 9th wicket partnership, but a world record 9th wicket partnership of 283 which still stands. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1908 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty-seven years. It was their fourteenth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish fourteenth in the Championship table. 1908 season Derbyshire played twenty games in the County Championship and one match against the touring Gentlemen of Philadelphia. The captain for the year was Reginald Rickman. Ernest Needham was top scorer and Arnold Warren took most wickets. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket.
