Al Kelly
Al Kelly was the stage name of Abraham Kalish (December 18, 1896, – September 7, 1966), a U.S. vaudeville comedian. Kelly was known as a double-talk artist, and went on to stooge for other comedians such as Willie Howard and Ernie Kovacs. Near the end of his life, he made occasional appearances on '' The Soupy Sales Show'' when it was based in New York. Biography Born in Kreva, Russia, now Belarus, Kelly started in an act called ''Nine Crazy Kids'', then started performing comic monologues. Early in his career, he performed largely in the Borscht Belt. When he was performing this stand-up comedy in the 1930s, he fluffed a joke so that it came out as nonsense: this got a good laugh so he made such double-talk the focus of his act and became especially known for this. The Dinah Shore Chevy Show
''The Dinah Shore Chevy Show'' is an American variety series hosted by Dinah Shore, and broadcast on NBC from October 1956 to May 1963. The series was sponsored by the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors and its theme song, sung by Shore, was " See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet", which continued to be used in Chevrolet advertising for several more years after the cancellation of the show. Synopsis The program began as a series of nine monthly specials substituting in the regular time slot of the ''Gillette Cavalcade of Sports''. NBC first tested the singing star in an hour long format with two prime time specials early in 1956. The first Chevy Show episode aired on October 5, 1956, with Frank Sinatra as guest. Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer
''Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer'' is a weekly comic strip written and drawn by Ben Katchor since 1988. It is published in ''The Jewish Daily Forward'' and various alternative weekly newspapers. Katchor embodies his love of the fading small-business community of New York City in the title character, a small businessman who wanders the streets taking pictures and being sidetracked into surreal escapades. Strips often depict Knipl's chance encounters with obscure, marginal businesses (e.g. a company that distributes newspaper weights to newsstands), eccentric hobbyists, and enigmatic details of the urban landscape. There is rarely continuity between the strips, and Knipl is the only recurring character. Ben Katchor
Ben Katchor (born November 19, 1951) is an American cartoonist and illustrator best known for the comic strip ''Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer''. He has contributed comics and drawings to ''The Forward'', ''The New Yorker,'' ''Metropolis'', and weekly newspapers in the United States. A Guggenheim Fellowship and MacArthur Fellowship recipient, Katchor was described by author Michael Chabon as "the creator of the last great American comic strip." Career Cartooning Katchor contributed occasional illustrations while on staff for ''The Kingsman'', the student newspaper of Brooklyn College, and he was an early contributor to ''RAW''. Roast (comedy)
A roast is a form of humor in which a specific individual, a guest of honor, is subjected to jokes at their expense, intended to amuse the event's wider audience. Such events are intended to honor a specific individual in a unique way. In addition to jokes and insult comedy, such events may also involve genuine praise and tributes. The implication is that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult. The individual is surrounded by friends, fans, and well-wishers, who can receive some of the same treatment as well during the course of the evening. The party and presentation itself are both referred to as a ''roast''. The host of the event is called the roastmaster, a pun on toastmaster. Anyone who is mocked in such a way is said to have been ''roasted''. ''Mack and Myer for Hire'' is an American sitcom that aired in syndication from 1963 to 1964. The show starred Mickey Deems and Joey Faye, and was produced by Trans-Lux Television in New York. Each episode was approximately 12 minutes long, and the show was filmed using a two-camera layout. Over 100 episodes were produced during its only year in production, and these were re-run well into the 1970s. The series was produced by Sandy Howard and directed by Ted Devlet. Premise Mack and Myer are two handymen, doing jobs for hire. In one episode, they are seen doing things such as building a fence.
