Al Naft Sport Club ( ar, نادي النفط الرياضي, lit=''Oil SC'') is an Iraqi professional sports club based in the Adhamiyah District, East Districts of the Tigris River, Baghdad. Their football team plays in the highest division in Iraq which is the Iraqi Premier League, which they have never been relegated from. History Al-Naft Sports Club was established in 1979 by the Ministry of Oil, and was officially registered in the Ministry of Youth and Sports in 1982. In the 1985 season the team played in the Iraqi Premier League for the first time, and finished in the penultimate position that season, and have remained in the Premier League since then. The club's football team has not won any trophies, but they were runners-up of the Al-Nasr wal-Salam Cup in 1996, the Durand Cup in 1996, the Iraqi Elite Cup in 1998, and the Iraqi Premier League in 2017, and qualified to play in the Arab Club Champions Cup. 2016–17 Iraqi Premier League
The 2016–17 Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز 2016–17) was the 43rd season of the Iraqi Premier League, the highest division for Iraqi association football clubs, since its establishment in 1974. The season started on 15 September 2016, and ended on 10 August 2017. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya won their sixth Premier League title, finishing four points ahead of second-placed Al-Naft and losing just one game throughout the campaign. It was the club's first league title since the 2004–05 season, and their manager Basim Qasim became the first manager to win titles in two consecutive seasons with two different teams. The 2021–22 Iraqi Premier League is the 48th season of the Iraqi Premier League, the highest tier football league in Iraq, since its establishment in 1974. The season started on 20 September 2021 and will end on 29 May 2022. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya are the defending champions after winning their seventh title last season. Al-Sinaa, Newroz and Samarra join as the three promoted clubs from the 2020–21 Iraq Division One. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Nadhim Shaker
Nadhim Shaker Salim ( ar, ناظم شاكر سالم; 18 December 1958 – 11 September 2020) was an Iraqi football player and coach of the Iraq national team. Playing career Nadhim Shaker was one of the most talented defenders in Iraqi football history. He began his playing career at Al-Amal in 1976 before moving to (Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya) the following year and played for the club until 1988, after which he became a player-manager for the Al-Salam club. He played for the Iraq national team from 1978 till 1986. The defender represented Iraq at the 1979 World Military Championship and at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico playing against Paraguay, Belgium and the hosts, Mexico. Al-Shorta Sports Club ( ar, نادي الشرطة الرياضي, lit=''Police Sports Club'') is an Iraqi sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. It has teams in 17 different sports, more than any other Iraqi club, and the best known section of the club is the football team, whose origins date back to 1932. In 1974, following the Iraq Football Association's decision to implement a clubs-only policy for domestic competitions, Al-Shorta were established as a sports club. Jamal Salih ( ar, جمال صالح) is a former Iraq national football player and coach, and currently as a sports director for Sharjah FC, and has been in the role since march of 2018. Career He began his career as a player with Al-Omma Sports Club. He helped guide Al-Jamiea (merged with Al-Talaba in 1978) to the top division in 1970 with the likes of Qusai Abdul-Sattar and Shamil Kamil, and became head coach of the club in 1974. He went on to coach Al-Rasheed, Al-Nafat, the Iraqi army national side and several clubs in Libya and the UAE. He holds a PhD in Sports Pedegogy from Pittsburgh University. Doctor Jamal Salih is one of the most historic coaches in the Iraqi Premier League, due to the three trophies that he collected as a manager in the 80's.
