Aktion Sorgenkind
The Aktion Mensch ("Mensch" means "human") registered association (up to 1 March 2000: "Aktion Sorgenkind", Sorgenkind can be translated as "children in need") is a German social organisation which was formed on the initiative of the ZDF, a German television channel, in 1964 and is financed from the Lottery. The organisation supports inclusion, which may be defined as equality for all in the community. The headquarters of the charitable organisation is in Mainz, the service centre is in Bonn. The registered association has seven members. Peter Frankenfeld
Peter Frankenfeld (born ''Willi Julius August Frankenfeldt'' on 31 May 1913 in Berlin – 4 January 1979 in Hamburg) was a German comedian, radio and television personality. After World War II he became an interpreter with the U.S. military government. In 1948 he went into broadcasting. He pioneered quiz programs on West German radio and television, becoming the country's best-known programme host and entertainer. He is remembered for some classic sketches such as "Der Überzieher" (about a man getting in trouble in a restaurant because he has to constantly guard his overcoat), "Die Bürgschaft" (his bumbling attempt to recite Schiller's poem '' The Hostage''), or "Die Wetterkarte" (''The Weather Chart'', where he speaks in a wide variety of German dialects). Rudi Cerne (born 26 September 1958) is a German TV presenter and former figure skater. He is the 1984 European silver medalist and a two-time West German national champion. Jörg Michael Pilawa (born 7 September 1965, in Hamburg) is a German television presenter. Life Pilawa studied after his school at Gymnasium Hummelsbüttel first medicine and then history, but he did not finish his university studies. Thalidomide Scandal
In the late 1950s and early 1960s and into the 80s, the use of thalidomide in 46 countries by women who were pregnant or who subsequently became pregnant resulted in the "biggest man-made medical disaster ever," with more than 10,000 children born with a range of severe deformities, such as phocomelia, as well as thousands of miscarriages. Thalidomide was introduced in 1953 as a tranquilizer, and was later marketed by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH, Chemie Grünenthal under the trade name Contergan as a medication for anxiety, insomnia, trouble sleeping, "tension", and morning sickness. It was introduced as a sedative and medication for morning sickness without having been tested on pregnant women.
