Air Faisal
Air Faisal is a defunct cargo airline based in the United Kingdom, which operated a fleet of Bristol Britannia freighters during the 1970s. History Initial Operations Air Faisal was founded in 1975 by two British Indian businessmen (Patel and Iqbal Raj), with the intention of operating charter flights between Birmingham and destinations in the Persian Gulf using a single ex- RAF Bristol Type 235F Britannia freighter (registration ''G-BDLZ''). These flights were intended to carry fresh produce to the owners' shops in Birmingham. The plans were delayed by the firm's lack of an AOC allowing them to operate the flights, which led to a dispute with the CAA, as Air Faisal's founders argued that, since they were operating the charters on behalf of Airwork India, this was not required. It was branded as Manston, Kent International Airport and was located in the parish of Minster-in-Thanet and partly adjacent to the village of Manston in the Thanet district of Kent, England, north-east of Canterbury. Formerly the site of RAF Manston, it was briefly known as London Manston Airport. The single runway was located about from the coastline at above sea level. It had the 11th-longest civilian runway in the United Kingdom (after Heathrow's two runways, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands, Doncaster, Prestwick and Belfast International), in length. Manston is a village and civil parish in the Thanet district of Kent, England. The village is situated one mile northwest of Ramsgate. The parish includes four hamlets and the former Manston Airport. Redcoat Air Cargo was a British cargo airline between 1976 and 1982 with headquarters at Horley in Sussex and an operating base at Luton Airport. History The company started operations in 1976 using a Bristol Britannia leased from Geminair. It used the aircraft to operate cargo flights from the United Kingdom to West Africa. It later bought its own Britannias, several being ex Royal Air Force Transport Command aircraft (including at least one previously operated by Air Faisal), and by 1979 was also operating freight charters for the Ministry of Defence. The crash of the Britannia in 1980 led to the purchase of a Canadair CL-44 from British Cargo Airlines.
