Ahuntsic
Ahuntsic (; French pronunciation ) is a district in the northern part of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Originally an independent village, Ahuntsic was first annexed by Montreal in 1910, then merged into the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville in 2002. It is home to Collège Ahuntsic and Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard. History The municipality of the Village of Ahuntsic was founded on January 21, 1897, by a proclamation of the Quebec provincial government. The council of the new village operated until 1910, when the province passed laws creating the charter of the City of Montreal. It was then annexed and later combined with Nouveau-Bordeaux, forming the district of Ahuntsic-Bordeaux. The city of Cartierville and Sault-au-Récollet were added in 1918. In 1952, following a land exchange, Ahuntsic took over part of Saint-Laurent. Ahuntsic-Cartierville ( (local accent)) is a borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The borough was created following the 2002 municipal reorganization of Montreal. It comprises two main neighbourhoods, Ahuntsic, a former village annexed to Montreal in 1910 and Cartierville, a town annexed to Montreal in 1916. Ahuntsic-Cartierville is located in the north end of Montreal, on the banks of the Rivière des Prairies. It traces its history to the fortified Sault-au-Récollet settlement, which was established by the Sulpicians in 1696. This in turn led to the colonization of the area. Collège Ahuntsic is a Francophone public college situated in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. History Founded in 1967, when the Quebec system of CEGEPs was created, it is today one of the largest CÉGEPs in Quebec. The College was created out of the amalgamation of two former institutions: the College Saint-Ignace and the Institut de technologies Laval, founded respectively in 1927 and 1941. The College Saint-Ignace taught the humanities whereas the Institut de technologies de Laval offered the main trade programs of the era. Finally, in 1970, the adjoining school, the Institut des arts graphiques du Quebec, which was a school of printing, joined the College. Today, the College is: 3 pre-university programs; 26 technical programs; 6000 regular education/full-time students and 4000 continuous education/part-time students; 900 employees, divided between 600 faculty members and 300 management and support staff. Ahuntsic-Cartierville is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2015. Ahuntsic-Cartierville was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution and was legally defined in the 2013 representation order. It came into effect upon the call of the 42nd Canadian federal election, scheduled for 19 October 2015. It was created from parts of Ahuntsic (80%) and Saint-Laurent—Cartierville (20%). Cartierville is a former district in north end Montreal, Quebec, Canada, located in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. Cartierville is bordered to the north by the Rivière des Prairies, to the south by the borough of Saint-Laurent, to the east across Autoroute 15 by Ahuntsic, and to the west by Bois-de-Saraguay Nature Park. History Cartierville grew as a suburb when it became in 1898 the north terminus of the Montreal Park and Island Railway tramway line, also known as the "17-Cartierville". The Garment District (french: Cité de la Mode) is a neighbourhood in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located primarily along Chabanel Street in the Ahuntsic neighbourhood of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough. The Chabanel Station (train) is located close by. History Montreal's Garment District was originally located downtown on De Maisonneuve Boulevard between Berri Street and Saint Laurent Boulevard. Furriers such as the Hudson's Bay Company and warehouses lined the streets in this area at the time. Sault-au-Récollet
Sault-au-Récollet (English: Recollet Rapids) is a neighbourhood in Montreal. It is located in the eastern edge of the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, bordering the Rivière des Prairies. Autoroute 19 connects Sault-au-Récollet to Laval. The neighbourhood was designated as a heritage site by the City of Montreal in 1992. The Church of the Visitation at Sault-au-Récollet is the oldest church on the Island of Montreal and was built between 1749 and 1752. The streetcar suburb was annexed by Montreal to from the former borough of Ahuntsic-Bordeaux in 1918. A housing boom, mostly made up of multiplexes, followed in the 1940s and 1950s. Saint-Laurent () is a borough of the city of Montreal, Canada, located in the northern part of the island. A CEGEP ( or ; ), also written cégep, CÉGEP and cegep, is a publicly funded college providing technical, academic, vocational or a mix of programs; they are exclusive to the province of Quebec's education system.
