Adrian Scott (entrepreneur)
Adrian Scott is a social networking site founder, technology entrepreneur, investor, and film and TV actor. He is best known as founder of the social networking site Ryze in the summer of 2001, and as a founding investor in Napster. Education Scott graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at age 16 with a B.S. cum laude in Mathematics, and received his Ph.D. in Mathematics at age 20. He then taught management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a visiting scholar for a semester. He was awarded the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol's General Carl A. Spaatz Award. Napster As an angel investor, Scott put some of the first money into Napster, the influential and pioneering peer-to-peer music service. Ryze Scott started building Ryze in early 2001. Napster
Napster was a peer-to-peer file sharing application. It originally launched on June 1, 1999, with an emphasis on digital audio file distribution. Audio songs shared on the service were typically encoded in the MP3 format. It was founded by Shawn Fanning, Sean Parker, and Hugo Sáez Contreras. As the software became popular, the company ran into legal difficulties over copyright infringement. It ceased operations in 2001 after losing a wave of lawsuits and filed for bankruptcy in June 2002. Later, more decentralized projects followed Napster's P2P file-sharing example, such as Gnutella, Freenet, FastTrack, and Soulseek. Legitmix
Legitmix was a Canadian company that offered services to artists who create remixes. The company launched in 2011 and had offices in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Brooklyn, New York. Legitmix sold files that rebuild a remixed song on a user's hard drive using the listener's copies of the sampled tracks. Remixers received 70% of the price of their Legitmix files, while copyright holders got paid for the purchase of the original tracks used in the remix. Music files used to construct remixes had to be exact matches to the ones legally sold through Legitmix. Because listeners were required to purchase or already own the original tracks used in a remix, the recreated remix might have been several times more expensive than the cost of an individual song.
