Adelaide Metro 4000 Class
The Adelaide Metro 4000 class, also referred to as A-City trains, are electric multiple unit trains built by Bombardier Transportation (later Alstom) in Dandenong, Victoria for the electrified Adelaide rail network. They are the only class of operational electric trains in South Australia, running services on the Gawler, Seaford and Flinders lines. The design shares similarities to the V/Line VLocity and Transperth B-series trains, also built by Bombardier. History In March 2011, Bombardier Transportation was awarded a contract to build 22 three-carriage trains for the Adelaide rail network, that was in the process of being electrified. Hallett Cove Railway Station
Hallett Cove railway station is located on the Seaford line. Situated in the southern Adelaide suburb of Hallett Cove , it is 21.4 kilometres from Adelaide station. History A station opened in 1915 as Hallett's Cove as part of the former Willunga line. It was closed to freight in 1962, and was renamed Hallett Cove in 1965. In the early years of the line, it had a stone-loading plant, traces of which may still be seen. That station was about a kilometre east of the present Hallett Cove station. In 1959, a branch was approved to make Hallett Cove a junction with a branch from near the station to the Port Stanvac Refinery, which was opened on 14 May 1963. The Willunga line was cut back to Hallett Cove in 1971, and the Port Stanvac branch became the main line of the Christie Downs (later Noarlunga Centre, now Seaford) line in 1974. Flinders Railway Line
The Flinders railway line is a suburban commuter line in Adelaide, South Australia, that branches off the Seaford line at Mitchell Park, and ends opposite Science Park, close to the Flinders University and the Flinders Medical Centre. The line is single track for most of its length, from Celtic Avenue, near Mitchell Park station, to its terminus. History The railway was constructed between 1965 and 1966, as a branch line from Woodlands Park railway station on what was then the Willunga railway line, to serve the new Chrysler assembly plant at Clovelly Park. Construction of the plant had commenced in 1963, and the assembly line was opened in October 1964, remaining operational until it was closed in March 2008. 3000 Class Railcar
The 3000/3100 class are a class of diesel railcars operated by the State Transport Authority and its successors in Adelaide. They were built by Comeng and Clyde Engineering between 1987 and 1996 and are the workhorse of the non-electrified suburban rail network in Adelaide. History In March 1985, the State Transport Authority (STA) awarded a tender for 20 diesel railcars (eight 3000 class units with a cab at each end and twelve 3100 class with a cab at one end only) to Comeng in Dandenong, Victoria. The design was based on the stainless steel shell of the Comeng electric train then in production for Melbourne's Public Transport Corporation, but longer and with only two doors per side. Adelaide Railway Station
Adelaide Railway Station is the central terminus of the Adelaide Metro railway system. All lines approach the station from the west, and it is a terminal station with no through lines, with most of the traffic on the metropolitan network either departing or terminating here. It has nine platforms, all using broad gauge track. It is located on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino occupies part of the building that is no longer required for railway use. Until 1984, Adelaide station was also the terminus for regional and interstate passenger trains, but there are no longer any regular regional train services in South Australia, and all interstate services are now handled at Adelaide Parklands Terminal. Dry Creek, South Australia
Dry Creek is a mostly industrial suburb north of Adelaide, containing significant wetlands. A substantial area was devoted to salt crystallisation pans until 2014, with plans to redevelop the site for housing. This housing plan, first put forward in 2008, was revived in 2013, for a proposed 10,000 homes. Salt production ceased in 2014, and in 2016 Ridley Corporation, which managed the salt pans, sold the land to Adelaide Resource Recovery. Description It is named for the Dry Creek, a stream and drain which flows through the suburb and into Swan Alley, a tidal distributary of Barker Inlet, Gulf St Vincent. It was the site of the soapworks of W. H. Burford & Sons from 1923 (adjacent to the Dry Creek railway station, and formerly used for smelting ore from Broken Hill) and a pioneering "garden suburb" for its employees, designed by W. J.
