Adelaide Art Circle
The Adelaide Art Circle was an association of artists in Adelaide, South Australia, founded by H. P. Gill. The club was founded early in 1890, with Gill as president and G. A. Reynolds as hon. secretary. According to the rules as laid down by Gill, membership was restricted to professional artists, by invitation, and limited to 12 members. They would meet monthly in one or other of the members' homes, and each had to submit a new work to be critiqued by the other members. They would hold annual exhibitions. The first members were Gill and Reynolds, watercolorist W. P. H. Haines, A(lfred) Scott Broad, Edward Davies, M. F. Cavanagh, H. E. Powell, W. K. Gold, E. J. Woods and W. J. Maxwell. W. J. Wadham and his brother Alf Sinclair were elected to the circle in 1892. Two exhibitions were held, and generally well received, but clearly dominated by Gill's prodigious output. Adelaide ( ) is the capital city of South Australia, the state's largest city and the fifth-most populous city in Australia. Edward Davies (architect)
Edward Davies F.S.A.I.A. (12 April 1852 – 2 April 1927) was an architect and arts administrator in South Australia. History Davies was born in Newport, Wales, and emigrated to Melbourne with his parents when quite young. His father Edward was a tanner, and immediately started a tanning business at Richmond on the banks of the Yarra. He was to follow in his father's business, but was persuaded by Joseph Lambeth to study drawing. He served a five-year apprenticeship with Albert Purchas, a Melbourne architect, then after a few years experience in the building trade joined the Victorian Education Department as a draftsman. In 1876 he joined the South Australian Education Department as a senior draftsman under J. E. Woods. He left the Public Service to work with architect James Cummings, and after winning design competitions for Clayton Congregational Church, Kensington and East Adelaide Congregational Church was admitted as a partner. Herbert Edward Powell
Herbert Edward Powell (19 July? 1871 – 31 August 1940), commonly referred to as H. E. Powell, was a painter and photolithographer in Adelaide, South Australia. He was an important member of the South Australian Society of Arts. History Powell was born in Adelaide, son of baker William Powell, for whom Powell's Corner, Kent Town, South Australia, Kent Town, was named. He was a student at the School of Design (Adelaide), School of Design 1887–1900 under H. P. Gill, gaining several diplomas from the South Kensington Art School. He joined the Public Service in 1887, and worked in the Government photolithography department under Alfred Vaughan until succeeding him as Government photolithographer in 1921. The photolithographic department was responsible for production of much of the South Australian photographic resources used by the Education Department, Tourist Bureau and other departments. Alf Sinclair
Brothers William Joseph Wadham (1863–1950) and Alfred Sinclair Wadham (1866–1938) were English painters in watercolors who were active in Australia in the late 19th century. The younger brother invariably used the name Alfred Sinclair. History Wadham and Sinclair were sons of Benjamin Brassett (or Braffat) Wadham (1816–1904), a painter of some note who was deaf and dumb from birth. Joseph learnt to paint at his father's side, and accompanied him on his many sketching trips throughout England and Wales, and had the privilege of seeing many of England's premier artists at work. Joseph had his first picture accepted for exhibition by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, at age 14. In 1885 he left for Australia. The South Australian Society of Arts was a society for artists in South Australia, later with a royal warrant renamed The Royal South Australian Society of Arts in 1935. History A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a society for the promotion of the fine arts was held on Monday evening 13 October 1856 at the Adelaide School of Arts, in Pulteney Street. Owing to the inclemency of the weather very few persons were present. Mr James MacGeorge took the chair. Letters were read from Mr. Fisher, M.L.C., Mr. Tomkinson, Mr. J. Howard Clark, Mr. C. A. Adelaide Easel Club
The Adelaide Easel Club was a society for South Australian painters which broke away from the South Australian Society of Arts in 1892 and which re-merged with the parent organization in 1901. History The club was founded in November 1892 when a group of Adelaide artists broke away from the Society of Arts, formulating a set of rules, one of which was that members must submit a sketch at each meeting based on a subject nominated at the previous meeting, and which would be shown to fellow members. Chief Justice Way
Sir Samuel James Way, 1st Baronet, (11 April 1836 – 8 January 1916) was an English-Australian jurist who served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia from 18 March 1876 until 8 January 1916. Background Way was born in Portsmouth, England. Reverend James Way, his father, was a clergyman in the Bible Christian Church, who emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1850 along with his wife and four younger children to establish a mission. Samuel, the eldest child, remained behind, studying at Shebbear College in Shebbear, a small village in North Devon, and later at a school in Chatham in Kent. He left England to rejoin his family at the end of 1852, arriving in Adelaide in March 1853.
