Adalberto Garelli
Adalberto Garelli (July 10, 1886 - January 13, 1968) was an Italian engineer and entrepreneur who patented a gearbox and a Split-single engine engine. Garelli founded the motorcycle company Garelli Motorcycles in 1919. Education Garelli graduated from college with a degree in engineering in 1909. Business career After graduating with an engineering degree in 1909, Garelli went to work for Fiat. Garelli left Fiat in 1911 when they did not express interest in his ideas for a 2 stroke motor. Between 1911 and 1919 Garelli worked for several motorcycle companies: Bianchi and Stucchi. During this time Garelli patented a 3 speed gearbox and a 2 stroke 2 cylinder engine. From 1911-1914, Garelli patented a split single engine which used a single connecting rod and long wrist pin which passed through both pistons. Bogliasco ( lij, Boggiasco) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Genoa in the Italian region Liguria, located about southeast of Genoa. Split-single Engine
In internal combustion engines, a split-single design is a type of two-stroke where two cylinders share a single combustion chamber. The first production split-single engine was built in 1918 and the design was used on several motorcycles and cars until the mid 1950s, although one company continued producing split-single engines for motorcycles until 1970. During this time, the design was also occasionally used for engines with four or more cylinders. Principle of operation The split-single uses a two-stroke cycle (i.e. where every downward stroke produces power) with the following phases: # Pistons travel upwards, compressing the fuel-air mixture in both cylinders. Garelli Motorcycles was an Italian moped and motorcycle manufacturer. It was founded in 1919 by Adalberto Garelli (10 July 1886 – 13 January 1968). History At age 22, Adalberto Garelli received a degree in engineering and dedicated his work to developing and perfecting the two-stroke engine for Fiat. Garelli quit in 1911 due to Fiat's lack of enthusiasm for the two-stroke engine. He continued his own engine design between 1911 and 1914 which resulted in the 350 cc split-single cylinder engine. Edoardo Bianchi S.p.A., commonly known as Bianchi () is the world's oldest bicycle manufacturing company in existence, having pioneered the use of equal-sized wheels with pneumatic rubber tires. Prinetti & Stucchi, later Stucchi & Co., was an Italian maker of sewing machines, bicycles and motorized vehicles, established in Milan in 1883. It was owned by engineers and politicians Augusto Stucchi and Giulio Prinetti (1851–1908). Cycle manufacture In 1892 Stucchi Prinetti & Stucchi began manufacturing bicycles.
