Acerra Cathedral ( it, Duomo di Acerra; Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the town of Acerra in Campania, southern Italy, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Since the 11th century it has been the seat of the Bishop of Acerra. History and description The present Neoclassical cathedral stands on the site of an Ancient Roman temple of Hercules. It has been rebuilt many times and the present building is of the 19th century. It has a Latin cross ground plan, with a nave and two side aisles separated by piers, and a cupola. The west front is Neo-classical, with eight large Ionic columns standing on a chessboard paving of alternating basalt and marble slabs. Giovanni Da Nola
Giovanni da Nola (1478–1559), also known as Giovanni Merliano, was an Italian sculptor and architect of the Renaissance, active in Naples. He was born the son of a leather merchant, in Nola near Naples. Da Nola moved to Naples where he trained under Aniello del Fiore and Benedetto da Maiano. In his youth, he traveled to Rome where he was influenced by Michelangelo, and then returned to Naples where he spent the rest of his career as sculptor and architect. As an architect he built a number of palaces in Naples, including the Palazzo Giusso, now the home of the Naples Eastern University. Many of the statues he created in Naples were removed to Spain by the viceroys then in charge of the Kingdom of Naples on behalf of the Spanish crown. Fabrizio Santafede or Fabrizio Santaféde (c. 1560–1623/28) was an Italian painter known for his altarpieces. Giovanni Bernardino Azzolini (c. 1572 – 12 December 1645) was an Italian painter and sculptor who continued painting in a late-Mannerist style, mainly active in Naples and Genoa. Giacinto Diano or Diana (28 March 1731 – 13 August 1803) was an Italian painter, active in Southern Italy in a style that mixes Rococo and Neoclassicism. Life Giacinto was born in Pozzuoli, and died in Naples. He trained in the studio of Francesco De Mura, whose work would influence his early compositions.
