Académie Vitti
The Académie Vitti was an art school in Paris, France. It was founded and operated by a family of Italian artists' models from the Valle di Comino to the south of Rome. The academy was progressive in its support for women artists, and gained a high reputation. Teachers included Paul Gauguin and Frederick William MacMonnies. History The Académie Vitti, a private art school at 49, boulevard du Montparnasse, Paris was founded in 1889 by Cesare Vitti, his wife Maria Caira, and her sisters Anna Caira and Jacinta Caira. Cesare Vitti came from Casalvieri, a village in the Valle di Comino close to Atina in the mountains south of Rome. He began as an artist's model, then became a painter and sculptor himself. The three Caira sisters, their cousin Carmela and their brother Antonio came from nearby Gallinaro. They moved to Paris and worked as models for painters, sculptors and photographers. Valle Di Comino
The Valle di Comino () is a valley in the province of Frosinone, in Lazio in central Italy. It runs from San Biagio Saracinisco to Vicalvi and is adjacent to the Abruzzi mountains. It grossly corresponds to the upper valley of the Melfa river, which runs through it before joining the Liri. History According to tradition, the name of the valley can be traced to ancient Cominium, destroyed in 293 BC. In Livy's ''History of Rome'', there are early references to Cominium as the site of a battle between the Samnites and the ancient Rome, Romans. Some suggest that the town of San Donato Val di Comino, San Donato is the ancient Cominium, others believe the battle site was at Vicalvi. Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa
Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa (1871–1959), known in Catalan as Hermenegild (or Hermen) Anglada Camarasa, was a Catalan and Balearic Spanish painter. Life and career Born in Barcelona, he studied there at the Llotja School. His early work had the clear academic imprint of his teacher, Modest Urgell. In 1894 he moved to Paris, and studied at the Académie Julian. He adopted a more personal style, after that of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, with their depictions of nocturnal and interior subjects. But his work was also marked by the intense colors which presaged the arrival of Fauvism. Lively brushwork reveals strong Oriental and Arab influences. Allied with the Vienna Secession movement, his decorative style draws comparison to Gustav Klimt. One of his most important works is a portrait of Sonia Klamery. Mabel Conkling
Mabel Harris Conkling (November 17, 1871 – October 11, 1966) was an American sculptor, and president of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors from 1926 to 1928. Early life Mabel Viola Harris was born in Boothbay, Maine, the daughter of Charles Thomas Harris and Orissa Edna Preble Harris. After graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School, She studied art in Paris, at the Académie Julian, the Académie Vitti, the Académie Carmen, and the Académie Colarossi. Among her instructors were William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Raphaël Collin, Luc-Olivier Merson, and Frederick William MacMonnies. A 1904 portrait of Mabel Conkling by MacMonnies was called "the finest portrait MacMonnies has yet made." Paul-Jean-Louis Gervais (7 September 1859 – 11 March 1944) was a French painter who was fashionable around the end of the 19th century. He is known for his sensuous paintings of nude women. Life Paul-Jean-Louis Gervais was born in Toulouse, France on 7 September 1859. He was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) and of Gabriel Ferrier (1847–1914). Paul Gervais was teaching at the Académie Julian in 1887, where one of his pupils was Abbott Fuller Graves. In July 1891 Gervais won the Prix du Salon with 19 votes against 16 for M. Ragnhild Kaarbø (26 December 1889 – 20 August 1949) was a Norwegian painter. Personal life She was born at Harstad in Troms, Norway. She was one of thirteen children born to Rikard Kaarbø and Anna Elisabeth Lund. Her father was a successful businessman who was associated with the establishment of the town of Harstad. He founded several businesses and fostered development of the local shipping industry. Career Kaarbø attended a boarding school in Celle, Germany and decided to pursue a career in art. Tyko Konstantin Sallinen (March 14, 1879 in Nurmes – September 18, 1955 in Helsinki) was a Finnish expressionism style painter.
