Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac Syndrome
Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac syndrome (AKL syndrome), also called nephropathic cystinosis, is an autosomal recessive renal disorder of childhood comprising cystinosis and renal rickets. Presentation Affected children are developmentally delayed with dwarfism, rickets and osteoporosis. Renal tubular disease is usually present causing aminoaciduria, glycosuria and hypokalemia. Cysteine deposition is most evident in the conjunctiva and cornea. In genetics, dominance is the phenomenon of one variant (allele) of a gene on a chromosome masking or overriding the effect of a different variant of the same gene on the other copy of the chromosome. Cysteine (symbol Cys or C; ) is a semiessential proteinogenic amino acid with the formula . The thiol side chain in cysteine often participates in enzymatic reactions as a nucleophile. ''CTNS may also refer to the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences.'' ''CTNS'' is the gene that encodes the protein cystinosin in humans. George Lignac
George Otto Emil Lignac (30 August 1891 – 5 September 1954) was a Dutch pathologist-anatomist. Lignac was born in Passoeroean, Java, Dutch East Indies, where his father worked as a civil servant. He studied medicine at Leiden and then returned to the Dutch East Indies and was a teacher at the STOVIA (''School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen'' or "school for the training of Indian physicians") in Batavia. He returned to the Netherlands and was appointed professor of pathology, general diseases, pathological anatomy, and juridical medicine in Leiden in 1934. He published work on skin pigmentation, cysteine metabolism and the carcinogenic nature of benzol and many more. Eduard Kaufmann
Eduard Kaufmann (24 March 1860, Bonn – 15 December 1931, Göttingen) was a German physician. The disease Abderhalden–Kaufmann–Lignac syndrome is named for him. Career Kaufmann studied in Bonn and Berlin, and earned his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1884. He was appointed privatdozent for anatomical pathology in Breslau three years later, and assisted at Emil Ponfick’s institute. In 1896 Kaufmann became prosector at Allerheiligenhospital in Breslau and professor in 1897. In 1898 he became professor of pathology and anatomical pathology and head of the Pathological Anatomical Institute of the University of Basel. Emil Abderhalden (9 March 1877 – 5 August 1950) was a Swiss biochemist and physiologist. His main findings, though disputed already in the 1910s, were not finally rejected until the late 1990s. Whether his misleading findings were based on fraud or simply the result of a lack of scientific rigor remains unclear. Abderhalden's drying pistol, used in chemistry, was first described by one of his students in a textbook Abderhalden edited. Hypokalemia
Hypokalemia is a low level of potassium (K+) in the blood serum. Mild low potassium does not typically cause symptoms. Symptoms may include feeling tired, leg cramps, weakness, and constipation. Low potassium also increases the risk of an abnormal heart rhythm, which is often too slow and can cause cardiac arrest. Causes of hypokalemia include vomiting, diarrhea, medications like furosemide and steroids, dialysis, diabetes insipidus, hyperaldosteronism, hypomagnesemia, and not enough intake in the diet. Cystinosis
Cystinosis is a lysosomal storage disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of cystine, the oxidized dimer of the amino acid cysteine. It is a genetic disorder that follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder resulting from accumulation of free cystine in lysosomes, eventually leading to intracellular crystal formation throughout the body. Glycosuria
Glycosuria is the excretion of glucose into the urine. Ordinarily, urine contains no glucose because the kidneys are able to reabsorb all of the filtered glucose from the tubular fluid back into the bloodstream. Glycosuria is nearly always caused by elevated blood glucose levels, most commonly due to untreated diabetes mellitus.
