''A Tribute to Teresa Teng - A Rocking Farewell'' (告别的摇滚) is a tribute album released in July 1995 on Beijing-based label Bamboo Book Culture (竹书文化), shortly after Teresa Teng's death on May 8, 1995. It features ten of Teng's songs covered by several of Beijing's most well-known first-generation rock bands. Tang Dynasty (band)
Tang Dynasty () is a Chinese rock band formed in 1989. They are often credited as being the first Chinese heavy metal band. Biography Singer and rhythm guitarist Ding Wu, bassist Zhang Ju, and Chinese-American guitarist Kaiser Kuo co-founded Tang Dynasty in early 1989. Kaiser left shortly after to return to the United States. Liu "Lao Wu" Yijun took his place and, according to Kaiser, went on to become China's first "guitar hero." In 1991, the band released its metal/rock version of "The Internationale" in Chinese. Tang Dynasty rose to fame with their eponymous debut album, released in December 1992. The album officially sold about 2,000,000 authentic copies throughout Asia and abroad, not counting the multitudes more of infringing copies. ADO (band)
ADO were a seminal Sino-foreign rock band, formed in Beijing in 1986. They are most remembered for collaborating with Cui Jian, a partnership that yielded Cui's first complete album, '' Rock 'n' Roll on the New Long March'', in 1989. The album included " Nothing to My Name", the first rock anthem in China, and Cui's most famous song. The band took their name from the Swahili word for "friend". ADO included two foreigners: bassist Kassai Balazs, a Hungarian student, and guitarist/vocalist Eddie Randriamampionona, a Madagascan embassy worker. Liu Yijun (), also known as Lao Wu (; lit. "Old Five") is a Chinese musician and artist, best known for his work as the former lead guitarist for seminal Chinese progressive metal band Tang Dynasty. He is often regarded as China's first guitar hero. Early life Liu was born in Tianjin, China. Most sources list his birth year as 1962, although one source specifies his birthday as 10 January 1963. "Lao Wu" was the fifth child in the family, and acquired the nickname early in his youth. The family moved to nearby Langfang in 1971, during the Cultural Revolution. Liu's older sister was involved in an arts-and-literature propaganda team; as a result, he grew up surrounded by musical instruments. He studied the erhu for two years during primary school. Ding Wu
Ding Wu () (born December 30, 1962) is a Chinese musician, best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the seminal progressive metal band Tang Dynasty. His distinct, wailing falsetto draws influences from Beijing Opera. Early life and career Ding Wu was born in Beijing. His father was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army, and his mother was a Party cadre. He took up drawing at age 3. In 1968, Ding and his family relocated to Manchuria, moving back to Beijing in 1972. As a result, he did not attend school until he was ten years old. Ding developed an interest in Beijing Opera at around age 8, and picked up the guitar in 1976. Tian Mi Mi
"Tian Mi Mi" (; literally "very sweet") is a 1979 Mandarin Chinese song by Teresa Teng. The lyrics were written by Zhuang Nu. The music was adapted from a 1940s gambang kromong about sampan boats called "Dayung Sampan" by the ''pasindhèn'' Dasimah. The film ''Tian mi mi'' (''Comrades: Almost a Love Story'') is named after and features the Teresa Teng song. Recording and versions In 1978, while on tour in Southeast Asia, Teng produced an Indonesian-language cover of "Dayung Sampan", a popular song in Indonesia and Singapore. Zhang Ju (Chinese: 张炬; pinyin: ''Zhāng Jǜ'') (May 17, 1970 – May 11, 1995), was a Chinese musician, best known as the founding bassist and backing vocalist for the seminal progressive metal band Tang Dynasty. Early life and career Zhang was born into a Tujia family in Hunan province. As a child, he showed an interest in athletics, winning second place in the national high jump competition. He received his first guitar as a birthday present during his first year of junior high school. In 1987, Zhang formed a band with vocalist Gao Qi and guitarist Cao Ping, switching to bass as they did not yet have a bass player. The band soon broke up due to ego clashes and musical differences. Zhuang Nu
Zhuang Nu (; 22 February 1921 – 11 October 2016) is the pen name of Wang Jingxi (), a Taiwanese lyricist. Career Wang Jingxi was born in Beijing in 1921, and was admitted to the Beiping Zhonghua Journalism Academy (北平中華新聞學院) in 1939. After that, he was admitted to the Air Force Mechanical School in Chengdu to study ground handling. Later, in order to conceal his identity, he changed his name to Huang He (黃河). After graduating in 1945, he went to Wuhan Airport. In the same year, Japan surrendered. Because of his literary and artistic attainments, he was transferred to the Army Cultural and Industrial Corps. In 1949, Huang He came to Taiwan with the Republic of China Army.
