''A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel'' is a 1635 oil painting by Judith Leyster that is now in the National Gallery, London. Academic interpretation There have been various interpretations of Judith Leyster's ''A Boy and a Girl with a Cat and an Eel'' by different scholars. Some, such as Neil McLaren, have argued that it represents the Dutch proverb "''Een aal bij de staart hebben''" (or "to hold an eel by the tail") meaning that you do not get to hold onto something just because you have it. This moralistic interpretation is supported, Cynthia Kortenhorst-Von Bogendorff Rupprath says, by the eye contact with the viewer made by the little girl in the painting as she wags her finger. Judith Jans Leyster (also Leijster; baptised July 28, 1609Molenaer, JudithNational Gallery of Art website. Accessed February 1, 2014. – February 10, 1660) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works, portraits, and still lifes. Her work was highly regarded by her contemporaries, but largely forgotten after her death. Her List of paintings by Judith Leyster, entire ''oeuvre'' came to be attributed to Frans Hals or to her husband, Jan Miense Molenaer. In 1893, she was rediscovered and scholars began to attribute her works properly. Biography Leyster was born in Haarlem to a local brewer. She was the eighth child of Jan Willemsz Leyster. While the details of her training are uncertain, she was mentioned by contemporary Haarlem poet Samuel Ampzing in his book ''Beschrijvinge ende lof der stadt Haerlem'' (1628). Jan Miense Molenaer
Jan Miense Molenaer (1610 – buried 19 September 1668), was a Dutch Golden Age genre painter whose style was a precursor to Jan Steen's work during Dutch Golden Age painting. He shared a studio with his wife, Judith Leyster, also a genre painter, as well as a portraitist and painter of still-life. Both Molenaer and Leyster may have been pupils of Frans Hals. Biography Molenaer was born and died in Haarlem. He achieved a style close to Hals' early on in his career, but later developed a style like that of Dutch genre painter, Adriaen van Ostade. His genre works often depicted players of music, such as his ''The Music Makers'' ( Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest), ''The Duet'' ( Seattle Art Museum), or ''Family Making Music'' ( Frans Hals Museum).
