Azerbaijani classical music ( az, Azərbaycan klassik musiqisi) includes a range of musical styles rooted in the traditions of Western or European classical music that European settlers brought to the country from the 20th century and onwards. History Azerbaijan Democratic Republic era The professional classical music in Azerbaijan is associated with name of composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Soviet era In 1920, Azerbaijani classical music had undergone a renaissance and Baku Academy of Music was founded to give classical musicians the same support as folk musicians. After World War II, Fikret Amirov introduced a new genre called symphonic mugam. Uzeyir Hajibeyov International Music Festival
The Uzeyir Hajibeyov International Music Festival is held in September, since 2009, in Azerbaijan. Musical events are held in several cities of Azerbaijan, and the main ceremonies take place in Baku. History Since 1995, September 18 (Uzeyir Hajibeyov's birthday) was celebrated as National Music Day in Azerbaijan. Beginning in 2009, it was decided to hold the International Music Festival devoted to well-known Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov's creativity. Overview The festival usually lasts 10 days. Shafiga Akhundova
Shafiga Akhundova ( az, Şəfiqə Axundova; 21 January 1924 – 26 July 2013) was a prominent Azerbaijani composer, the first professional female author of an opera in the East and People’s Artist of Azerbaijan. Akhundova was born into a family of an eminent cultural figure Gulam Akhundov. In 1943–1944, Shafiga got her primary education at Baku Musical School named after Asaf Zeynally, where she was taught by Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Then, in 1956, she continued her education at Azerbaijan State Conservatoire named after Uzeyir Hajibeyov, where she graduated from the class of B. Zeydman. In 1998, Shafiga Akhundova was conferred a title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan and in 2005 she was awarded with the Shohrat Order. Vasif Adigozalov
Vasif Zulfugar oghlu Adigozalov (alternative spellings: Adigezalov, Adygozal) ( az, Vasif Zülfüqar oğlu Adıgözəlov; 28 July 1935 – 15 September 2006) was one of Azerbaijan's most distinguished composers. He is the son of khananda Zulfu Adigozalov, brother of violinist and singer Rauf Adigozalov and the father of conductor Yalchin Adigozalov. Career Vasif Adigozalov excelled both as composer and performer. He majored in Piano as well as Composition at the Azerbaijani Conservatory (now Baku Music Academy). His piano professor was Simuzar Guliyeva and throughout his career, he gave numerous concerts on stage as a pianist and accompanist. In the early 1960s, he accompanied legendary Azerbaijani singer Rashid Behbudov (1915–1989). Later on, he pursued a solo career and performed his own pieces.

Biography Tofig Bakikhanov, a descendant of Baku khans, was born on 8 December 1930 in Baku, in the family of Ahmed–agha Bakikhanov, People's Artist of Azerbaijan. Fikrat Amirov
Fikret Mashadi Jamil oghlu Amirov ( az, Fikrət Məşədi Cəmil oğlu Əmirov; November 22, 1922, Ganja – February 20, 1984, Baku) was a prominent Soviet and Azerbaijani composer. Biography Fikret Amirov grew up in an atmosphere of Azerbaijani folk music. His father, Mashadi Jamil Amirov, was a famous mugam singer ("''xanəndə''"), who played tar and composed, including the 1915 opera '' Seyfal mulk''. During his childhood and early adolescence, Fikret began composing pieces for the piano. Upon his graduation from the Ganja Music College, Amirov entered the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire, now known as the Baku Music Academy, where he was a student of Boris Zeidman and Uzeyir Hajibeyov.
