Axel Nicolai Herlofson
Axel Nicolai Herlofson (29 August 1845 in Østre Moland – 1910 in Christiania) was a Norwegian fraudster who is known for causing the Arendal crash, after defrauding customers and co-owners of Arendals Privatbank which he had co-founded in 1874. His scheme had some similarities to a Ponzi scheme, and he had systemically falsified the bank's accounts for several years to cover up being insolvent. In 1886 the bank went bankrupt, and an investigation of Herlofson was initiated. He attempted to flee the country, but was arrested in the last minute and sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour, which he served in Norway's strictest prison at Akershus Fortress. Akershus Fortress
Akershus Fortress ( no, Akershus Festning, ) or Akershus Castle ( no, Akershus slott ) is a medieval castle in the Norwegian capital Oslo that was built to protect and provide a royal residence for the city. Since the Middle Ages the fortress has been the namesake and centre of the main fief and later main county of Akershus, which was originally one of Norway's four main regions and which included most of Eastern Norway. The fortress itself was located within the Akershus main county until 1919, and also within the smaller Akershus sub county until 1842. Diderik von Cappelen (21 June 1761 – 3 April 1828) was a Norwegian wholesaler, merchant, shipowner, estate owner and politician in 1814. He is often referred to as Diderik von Cappelen but he spelt his name ''Didrich von Cappelen'' and is also referred to as Didrik von Cappelen. Personal life and family Cappelen was born at Mæla Manor in Gjerpen (''Mæla gård i Gjerpen'') in the municipality of Skien, in Telemark, Norway. In accounting, insolvency is the state of being unable to pay the debts, by a person or company (debtor), at maturity; those in a state of insolvency are said to be ''insolvent''. There are two forms: cash-flow insolvency and balance-sheet insolvency.
