Avinguda De La Reina Maria Cristina
Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina () is an avenue in the Sants-Montjuïc district of Barcelona linking Plaça d'Espanya (Barcelona), Plaça d'Espanya with Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya on Montjuïc hill. It is named after Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, queen consort and regent of Spain. Part of the Fira de Barcelona is based here, with a number of yearly trade, technology and fashion fairs and festivals being held in this location. It's also the starting point of the Barcelona Marathon. The twin Venetian Towers are a major landmark at the junction of this avenue with Plaça d'Espanya. Venetian Towers
The Venetian Towers (in Catalan: ''Torres Venecianes'') is the popular name for a pair of towers on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina at its junction with Plaça d'Espanya in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. There is one tower on either side of the street. The towers are 47m high, with a 7.2 metres square cross-section. The bottom section of each is built of artificial stone, the main section of red brick, and the top section is a colonnaded viewing gallery built of artificial stone, and topped by a pyramidal copper roof. They were modelled on the campanile of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. They were originally envisaged in Léon Jaussely's city expansion plan of 1907, and designed by architect and built in the period 1927 to 1929, as part of the redevelopment of the area for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. Line 1, shortened to L1, coloured red and often simply called ''Línia vermella'' ("Red Line"), is the second oldest Barcelona Metro line, after line L3. Barcelona Metro
The Barcelona Metro (Catalan and Spanish: ) is an extensive network of rapid transit electrified railway lines that run mostly underground in central Barcelona and into the city's suburbs. It is part of the larger public transport system of Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, Spain, with unified fares under the (ATM) scheme. The Zurich Barcelona Marathon ( Catalan: ''Marató Barcelona''), formerly the Marathon Catalunya and later the Marató de Catalunya, is an annual marathon race over the classic distance of usually held in March in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and first held in 1978 in Palafrugell, Catalonia. The marathon is categorized as a Silver Label Road Race by World Athletics. History The marathon was first started by a Catalan chemist, Ramón Oliu, after he had run the New York City Marathon in 1976. Because there were no marathons in Catalonia at the time, Oliu decided to organize the first one in 1978. He held it in Palafrugell because he was unable to obtain a permit to hold it in Barcelona, and he named the race "Catalunya 78".
