Avezzano ( or ; nap, Avezzàne, label=Neapolitan language, Marsicano ) is a city and ''comune'' with a population of 40,819 inhabitants, situated in the Abruzzo region, province of L'Aquila, Italy. It is the second most populous municipality in the province and the sixth in the region. Avezzano was documented as an existing urban center in the ninth century. The city was destroyed by the 1915 Avezzano earthquake, earthquake of 1915. It was rebuilt after the 1944 Allied bombing. The city was decorated with the silver medal for civil merit, an award granted by the Italian Republic. It is the main commercial, industrial and agricultural centre of the Marsica area, with important high-tech industries and a large Telespazio Antenna farm, satellite farm (Fucino Space Centre). Madonna Di Pietraquaria
Madonna di Pietraquaria (Italian for Madonna of Pietraquaria) is one of the titles by which the Holy Virgin Mary is venerated as the Patroness of the city of Avezzano, in Abruzzo, Italy. On 1 January 1978, ''Maria Santissima di Pietraquaria'' ("Most Holy Mary of Pietraquaria") was proclaimed the patroness saint of the city of Avezzano. The Virgin Mary is celebrated with events and religious rites between 25 and 27 April. Pope Gregory XVI granted a canonical coronation towards the venerated image on 16 September 1838. 1915 Avezzano Earthquake
The 1915 Avezzano earthquake or 1915 Fucino earthquake occurred on 13 January in central Italy at . The shock had a moment magnitude of 6.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). The epicenter was located in the town of Avezzano (which was destroyed) in the Province of L'Aquila. Around 30,000 direct fatalities and $60 million in damage resulted from the earthquake. Marsica
Marsica is a geographical and historical region in the Abruzzo, central Italy, including 37 ''comuni'' in the province of L'Aquila. It is located between the plain of the former Fucine Lake, the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the plain of Carsoli and the valley of Sulmona. The area takes its name from the Marsi, an Osco-Umbrian Italic people, and then from the Latin adjective ''marsicus''. Mount Salviano
() is a massif in the Apennine Mountains#Abruzzi Apennines, Abruzzo Apennines, Central Italy. It includes the peaks of Monte d'Aria (), Monte Cimarani () and Monte San Felice (). Since 1999 the area, falling within the municipal territory of Avezzano (Province of L'Aquila), has been included in the Riserva Naturale di Monte Salviano. Description The Salviano mountain range is situated along the watershed between the Fucino basin and the Piani Palentini, in Marsica. In 1993 a serious fire burnt down dozens of hectares of Pinus nigra, black pine in the pinewood planted by the prisoners of Avezzano concentration camp in 1916. Ecological restoration, carried out through the reforestation of native and indigenous species, favoured the process of spontaneous regeneration consolidating the mountain area ecosystem.
