Today, their Italian Peruvian descendants live in the city and many of them still have Italian surnames. This era of successful commerce and agriculture ended drastically with the start of the War of the Pacific. Hosting a large Peru-Bolivian army under poor sanitary conditions the city lost a substantial part of its population to infectious diseases before its capture by Chile in May 1880 following a Battle of Tacna, defeat of the allied army in the outskirts of the city by a Chilean force under General Manuel Baquedano. Occupation by Chile During the war, the cities of Tacna and Arica, Chile, Arica were occupied by the Chilean Army, with Tacna being incorporated as a Communes of Chile, commune with a Tacna Province (Chile), province of the same name. A peace agreement, the Treaty of Ancón, was signed in 188 ...

Tacna Ornamental Fountain
Tacna Ornamental Fountain, is a fountain located in the Paseo Cívico of the centre of the city of Tacna, Peru. History There are various stories about this ornamental fountain. The most accepted was that this Pool was designed by the sculptor O'Lenhard and brought from Brussels, by the famous construction company Eiffel. However, it is undeniable that the statues in this fountain are by the French sculptor Mathurin Moreau. There are about twenty identical fountains around the world; Genoa, Boston and two in Buenos Aires's 9 de Julio Avenue. It is noted that it was acquired and gifted to the city of Tacna by the government of José Balta in 1869 or that it also arrived as part of the Uchusuma River contract. The installation work was carried out by the French technical expert Matias Richet and a Peruvian architect, surnamed Salazar, was in charge of the construction of the stone plinth. Tacna Department (Chile)
The Tacna Department was a territorial division of Chile that existed between 1884 and 1929. It was ceded by the Treaty of Ancón in 1883 and placed under military administration, and then created on the 31st of October 1884, as one of the three departments of the Tacna Province, incorporating as well a disputed claim over Tarata, and was returned to Peru at midnight on the 28th of August 1929, under the terms agreed upon in the Treaty of Lima of the same year. History Its limits were defined as the Sama River to the north, the Arica Department to the south, the Andes mountain range to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. In 1885 Chile integrated Tarata into the province, becoming in 1911 the Tarata Department, as the Chilean government argued the town was to the east of the Sama river. Peru, however, did not recognize this annexation on the grounds that the territory was completely unaffected by the Treaty of Ancón. Around this time, raids by Peruvian smugglers as well ...

Peruvian Sol
The sol (; plural: soles; currency sign: S/) is the currency of Peru; it is subdivided into 100 ''céntimos'' ("cents"). The ISO 4217 currency code is PEN. The sol replaced the Peruvian inti in 1991 and the name is a return to that of Peru's historic currency, as the previous incarnation of Peruvian sol (1863–1985), sol was in use from 1863 to 1985. Although ''sol'' in this usage is derived from the Latin ''solidus (coin), solidus'' (English: solid), the word also means "sun" in Spanish. There is thus a continuity with the old Peruvian inti, which was named after Inti, the Sun God of the Incas. At its introduction in 1991, the currency was officially called ''nuevo sol'' ("new sol"), but on November 13, 2015, the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Peruvian Congress voted to rename the currency simply ''sol''. History Currencies in use before the current Peruvian sol include: * The ''Spanish colonial real'' from the 16th to 19th centuries, with 8 reales equal to 1 peso. * The ...
