Autostrada A91 (Italy)
The Autostrada A91, also called Autostrada Roma-Fiumicino, is an Italian motorway which connects Rome to the Fiumicino Airport. The official "A91" name was assigned in the early 2000s. On many road signs along the route, the characteristic green octagonal marker of the Italian motorways still bears the letter ''A'' without number. History The motorway was built by its current operator ANAS and finished in 1959 at the same time as the entry into service of the Airport itself (which took place in different phases between 1956 and January 1961). It was initially classified as a State highway, with the name ''Strada statale 201 dell'Aeroporto di Fiumicino'', and became a motorway in 1969. On the occasion of the Great Jubilee of 2000, the motorway was enlarged with the construction of the third lane between the Grande Raccordo Anulare and the Airport, with the exception of a small stretch of approximately 4 km (about 2.5 miles) towards Rome. Portuense is the 11th ''Quarters of Rome, quartiere'' of Rome (Italy), identified by the initials Q.XI. The toponym is also used to indicate the urbanistic area 15b, in the Municipio XV. The population of the urbanistic area amounts to 30.362 inhabitants. There is also a ''suburbio'' (suburb) Portuense (suburbio of Rome), with the same name, identified by the initials S.VII. __TOC__ History Portuense is one of the first 15 ''Quartieri'' born in 1911 and officially established in 1921. Ponte Galeria is the 41st ''zona'' of Rome, Italy, identified by the initials Z. XLI. Geographically it was part of Agro Romano. The zone belongs to the Municipio XI. History The area of Ponte Galeria, populated since the Paleolithic, is the junction between two important roads, Via Portuense and Via della Magliana, as well as between two waterways, the river Tiber and the Rio Galeria. The latter, the ancient ''Careia'', was controlled by the Etruscans and, later, by the Romans, that left notable vestiges (the bridge, an aqueduct, a necropolis). In the 8th century, Pope Hadrian I built here a '' domusculta'' (a large fortified farm), which was later turned into a castle by Pope Gregory IV. Via Cristoforo Colombo (or just ''la Colombo'', as it is often called by the Romans; ) is a street in Rome (Italy) that links the historic centre to Ostia. Along most of its route, the street has three lanes for each direction of movement. With its length it is the longest Italian road among those included within the borders of a single municipality and, in several stretches, the largest in Italy. Via Cristoforo Colombo starts from Porta Ardeatina and continues south-west, ending on the coast in the district of Castel Fusano. The Via Laurentina is the name born by an ancient and a modern road of Italy, both leading southwards from Rome. The ancient road The question of the nomenclature of the group of roads between the Via Ardeatina and the Via Ostiensis is somewhat difficult, and much depends on the view taken as to the site of Laurentum. It seems probable, however, that the Via Laurentina proper is that which led out of the Porta Ardeatina of the Aurelian Wall and went direct to Tor Paterno, while the road branching from the Via Ostiensis at the third mile, and leading past Decimo to Lavinium (Pratica), which crosses the other road at right angles not far from its destination (the Laurentina there running SW and that to Lavinium SE) may for convenience be called Lavinatis, though this name does not occur in ancient times.
