Austrian Pavilion
The Austrian pavilion is a national pavilion of the Venice Biennale. It houses Austria's official representation during the Biennale. Background The Venice Biennale is an international art biennial exhibition held in Venice, Italy. Often described as "the Olympics of the art world", the Biennale is a prestigious event for contemporary artists known for propelling career visibility. The festival has become a constellation of shows: a central exhibition curated by that year's artistic director, national pavilions hosted by individual nations, and independent exhibitions throughout Venice. The Biennale parent organization also hosts regular festivals in other arts: architecture, dance, film, music, and theater. Biennale (), Italian for "biennial" or "every other year", is any event that happens every two years. It is most commonly used within the art world to describe large-scale international contemporary art exhibitions. As such the term was popularised by Venice Biennale, which was first held in 1895. Since the 1990s, the terms "biennale" and "biennial" have been interchangeably used in a more generic way - to signify a large-scale international survey show of contemporary art that recurs at regular intervals but not necessarily biannual (such as triennials, Documenta, Skulptur Projekte Münster). Karl Prantl (sculptor)
Karl Prantl (November 5, 1923 – October 8, 2010) was an Austrian sculptor. Biography Prantl was born in Pöttsching in the Austrian state Burgenland. He studied from 1946 to 1952 with the painter Albert Paris Gütersloh at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Vienna. As the stone sculpture, stone sculptor he became he was an autodidactism, autodidact. He was the founder of the International Sculpture Symposium. He held his first international symposium (''Symposion Europaischer Bildhauer'') with 8 participants in the old quarry ''Römersteinbruch'' in Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland. Prantl was invited to exhibit work in the Austrian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 1986. Prantl died of a stroke at his home on October 8, 2010, a month before his 87th birthday. Konrad Bayer
Konrad Bayer (17 December 1932 – October 1964) was an Austrian writer and poet. A member of the Wiener Gruppe, he combined apparently irreconcilable elements—violence, hermeticism, pessimism, ecstasy, banality—and influences (dadaism, surrealism, pataphysics, Wittgenstein, Stirner, Sade et al.)—into a bizarre linguistic solipsism which has held increasing fascination for German writers of the last few decades. His most important works are the novels ''Der Kopf des Vitus Bering'' (The Head of Vitus Bering) and ''Der sechste Sinn'' (The Sixth Sense), published posthumously in 1965 and 1966, respectively. Bayer committed suicide in October 1964 at the age of 32. Bernd Alois Zimmermann included his poetry in his ''Requiem für einen jungen Dichter'' (''Requiem for a Young Poet''), completed in 1969. Friedrich Achleitner
Friedrich Achleitner (23 May 1930 – 27 March 2019) was an Austrian poet and architecture critic. As a member of the Wiener Gruppe, he wrote concrete poems and experimental literature. His magnum opus is a multi-volume documentation of 20th-century Austrian architecture. Written over several decades, Achleitner made a personal visit to each building described. He was a professor of the history and theory of architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Life and career Achleitner was born in Schalchen, Upper Austria, the son of a farmer. He attended the Höhere Bundesgewerbeschule in Salzburg, and then studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1950 to 1953 with Clemens Holzmeister. Wiener Gruppe
The Wiener Gruppe (''Vienna Group'') was a small and loose avant-garde constellation of Austrian poets and writers, which arose from an older and wider postwar association of artists called Art-Club. The group was formed around 1953 under the influence of H. C. Artmann (1921–2000) in Vienna and existed for about a decade. Besides Artmann are Friedrich Achleitner (1930–2019), Konrad Bayer (1932–1964), Gerhard Rühm (b. 1930), Ingrid Wiener and Oswald Wiener (b. 1935) regarded as members. This group showed interest in Baroque literature, as well as in Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism. Important impulses also came from upholders of linguistic scepticism, linguistic criticism and linguistic philosophy, such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Fritz Mauthner or Ludwig Wittgenstein. Richard Kriesche
Richard Kriesche (born 28 October 1940 in Vienna) is an Austrian artist. He is considered one of the most productive and influential contemporary artists in Austria. Life and work From 1958 to 1963 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and at the University of Vienna. In 1991 Kriesche was appointed to the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach. In 1995-96 he took over a guest professorship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1996 he was appointed deputy head of the science department in the Office of the Styrian Provincial Government and in 1998 was appointed to the culture department. Christian Philipp Müller (born 2 November 1957) is a Swiss artist. Education and early work Müller was born in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, and attended the Farbe und Form (F+F) in Zurich from 1982 to 1983, where he studied Fine Arts and graphic design.
