The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences is an academy to promote health and medical sciences in Australia. It was established in June 2014. John Aitken (biologist)
Robert John Aitken (born 4 September 1947) is a British reproductive biologist, widely known for identifying oxidative stress as a significant contribution to infertility and its actions on human sperm function. He also made substantial contributions to clinical practice translation in male reproductive health, notably the development of new contraceptive vaccine. He was born in Bath, England but moved to Australia in 1997, where he took Chair of Biological Sciences at the University of Newcastle, then nominated to Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Health and Medicine and Laureate Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Newcastle (Australia), University of Newcastle since 2013. Brendan Scott Crabb FASM (born 13 September 1966) is an Australian microbiologist, research scientist and director and chief executive officer of the Burnet Institute, based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Background and early career Educated in Papua New Guinea and Australia, Crabb received a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in the Department of Microbiology. In 1992, he completed his PhD in virology with Michael J. Studdert at the School of Veterinary Science also at the University of Melbourne. His PhD project, which explored proteins of equine herpes, led to a diagnostic test which could distinguish horses infected by the lethal equine herpes virus-1 and the less damaging equine herpes virus-4. Adele Green
Adele Chandler Green (born 20 September 1952) is an Australian epidemiological senior scientist at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane and is the institute's Head of Cancer and Population Studies Group. Green is an international leader in the epidemiology of melanoma and skin cancer. She is best known for her contributions to the area of melanoma prevention, for which in 2013 she received the Queensland Australian of the Year Award and The Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Award. Paul Philip Glasziou (born 21 May 1954) is an Australian academic physician known for his research in evidence-based medicine. He is Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at Bond University, where he is also Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine. Katharina Gaus
Katharina Gaus (12 July 1972 – 3 March 2021) was a German-Australian immunologist and molecular microscopist. She was an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and founding head of the Cellular Membrane Biology Lab, part of the Centre for Vascular Research at the University of New South Wales. Gaus used new super-resolution fluorescence microscopes to examine the plasma membrane within intact living cells, and study cell signalling at the level of single molecules to better understand how cells "make decisions". A key discovery of Gaus and her team was how T-cells decide to switch on the body's immune system to attack diseases. Her work is of importance to the development of drugs that can work with T-cells in support of the immune system. Frank (Bernard Francis Xavier) Gannon (born 1947, Ireland) was the seventh Director of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Australia (2011 – 2020). He is a molecular biologist and has held high-profile appointments in scientific management and research in Ireland, England, the United States, France, Germany and Australia. Ian Hector Frazer (born 6 January 1953) is a Scottish-born Australian immunologist, the founding CEO and Director of Research of the Translational Research Institute (Australia). Frazer and Jian Zhou developed and patented the basic technology behind the HPV vaccine against cervical cancer at the University of Queensland. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute, Georgetown University, and University of Rochester also contributed to the further development of the cervical cancer vaccine in parallel. Nicholas M. Fisk (born 12 September 1956) is an Australian maternal-fetal medicine specialist, academic and researcher. As an obstetrician, Fisk is known for inventing the natural caesarean operation, also referred to as the family centred caesarean section. He has pioneered advances in understanding fetoplacental disease and its treatment, including characterising early human fetal stem cell populations, documenting “fetal pain” and its blockade by opioid analgesia, and unravelling the vascular basis of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Sandra Eades (born 1967) is a Noongar physician, researcher and professor, and the first Aboriginal medical practitioner to be awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in 2003. As of March 2020 she is Dean of Medicine at Curtin University. Early life and education Sandra Eades was born in Mount Barker, Western Australia and at the age of 12 moved to Perth with her family.
