Austra (band)
Austra is a Canadian electronic music band from Toronto, founded in 2009 by composer, singer-songwriter, and producer Katie Stelmanis. Stelmanis is the only permanent member of the project, with a rotating live band that has included Maya Postepski (drums), Dorian Wolf (bass, Moog), and Ryan Wonsiak (keyboards). It previously also featured the twin backing singers Sari and Romy Lightman of Tasseomancy. The band has released four studio albums—'' Feel It Break'' (2011), '' Olympia'' (2013), '' Future Politics'' (2017), and ''Hirudin'' (2020). History Formation and early years In 2004, Stelmanis and Postepski played in a band called Galaxy, together with Emma McKenna. At the same time, Stelmanis started making electronic music at home and was also writing industrial-inspired soundtracks for performance artist Zeesy Powers. Maya Postepski
Maya Alina Postepski is a Canadian musician and producer from Toronto. She has been making music for over ten years, best known as drummer of the electronic group, Austra. She is a prolific remix artist, DJ and she co-wrote and produced the 2012 album TRST with Robert Alfons as TR/ST (Arts & Crafts). She also performs solo under the title Princess Century. She released her second full-length LP, ''Progress'', on Paper Bag Records on October 16, 2015. In 2015 she moved to Belgium and Produced the album Forever by Soldout. She stopped working with Austra in May 2017 to focus on her solo project Princess Century and continues to Produce, DJ, make remixes and play drums for other bands including TR/ST. Telekom Electronic Beats (TEB) is an international music marketing program of Deutsche Telekom AG focusing on electronic music and international club culture. The program was founded in 2000. It comprises a media portfolio and has been organizing events such as concerts, festivals and club nights with mainly electronic music artists throughout Europe. Publishing TEB's media portfolio and formats have changed and developed since the start of the program: “Electronic Beats TV” is one of the longest running video magazines in electronic music. South By Southwest
South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and Convention (meeting), conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. Xylosynth
The xylosynth, also known as a "xylophonic synthesizer", is an instrument created by Will Wernick in 1986, originally specifically designed for the English pop band, the Drum Theatre. History In the early 1990s, there was a demand of artists wanting to play on acoustic mallets, Gerry McCavana, who was originally a Metrology Engineer, quit his job to spend time with Will Wernick. Emma McKenna
Emma Jane McKenna (born August 18, 1983) is a multi-disciplinary writer. She is currently a PhD Candidate in English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University. Emma's first book of poetry, '' Chenille or Silk'', was published on March 8, 2019, with Caitlin Press. ''Olympia'' is the second studio album by Canadian electronic music band Austra, released on June 17, 2013, by Domino. ''Olympia'' spawned three singles: "Home", "Painful Like" and "Forgive Me". The album received largely positive reviews from critics, who said that it had more "bombastic throb" compared to its predecessor while still showcasing lead singer Katie Stelmanis's "classically trained, massive voice", adding that it was "clean, considered, with every detail in its place and a clear sense of its own identity." Tasseomancy (band)
Tasseomancy is a Canadian experimental band from Toronto formed by twin sisters Sari and Romy Lightman. Biography Born in c. 1985 and raised in Toronto, the Lightman twins moved to Halifax to attend university. There the sisters began performing under the moniker Ghost Bees that they described as "experimental acoustic folk". The duo released their debut EP ''Tasseomancy'' on April 8, 2008, via Youth Club Records as Ghost Bees. The pair toured around North America in support of the record.
