Tasseomancy (band)
Tasseomancy is a Canadian experimental band from Toronto formed by twin sisters Sari and Romy Lightman. Biography Born in c. 1985 and raised in Toronto, the Lightman twins moved to Halifax to attend university. There the sisters began performing under the moniker Ghost Bees that they described as "experimental acoustic folk". The duo released their debut EP ''Tasseomancy'' on April 8, 2008, via Youth Club Records as Ghost Bees. The pair toured around North America in support of the record. Bella Union
Bella Union is a British independent record label founded in 1997 by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. It is now run solely by Raymonde. History After releasing records with 4AD for a large part of their career, Cocteau Twins decided to start up the Bella Union record label in 1997, through which they could release their own work as well as any collaborative efforts. The band split up not long after, but instead of letting the newly formed label go under, Robin Guthrie, Simon Raymonde and their former manager Fiona Glyn-Jones decided to take charge of it. ''The Coast'' is a free alternative weekly newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The paper distributes 24,000 copies per week throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. The paper is owned by ''Overstory Media Group''. Founded in 1993, ''The Coast'' has a generally left wing editorial policy. It focuses on local issues, especially "people working for change" within the community. Tasseography (also known as tasseomancy, tassology, or tasseology) is a divination or fortune-telling method that interprets patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediments. The terms derive from the French word ''tasse'' (cup), which in turn derives from the Arabic loan-word into French ''tassa'', and the respective Greek suffixes -graph (writing), -mancy ( divination), and -logy (study of). History Tasseomancy followed the trade routes of tea and coffee and was practiced by both Baltic and Slavic nations. It is closely related to the Romani people, whose nomadic lifestyle contributed to the spread of the practice, though its exact origins are unknown. Throughout its history, different regions have practiced it with slight variations which indicates that this form of divination was an oral tradition.
