Auguste-Savinien Leblond
Auguste-Savinien Leblond d'Olblen (19 October 1760 – 22 February 1811) was a French mathematician. In 1790, he coined the name ''metre'' for the unit of length. Life Auguste-Savinien Leblond came from a family of mathematicians. It was the profession of his father, and above all his great-uncle Guillaume Le Blond, and he himself was a teacher of mathematics, while publishing works that earned him the esteem of his peers. He is remembered as the inventor of a fixed and universal measurement of length, which, in 1790, he named "the metre". Borda would adopt this name two years later. Guillaume Le Blond
Guillaume Le Blond (1704 – May 24, 1781) was a French mathematician. He was born in Paris. He was a professor of mathematics at the grand stable of the King (1736) and then the Fils de France, Enfants de France (1756). Leblond kept this job until 1778, when he became secretary of the cabinet of Madame Victoire. Le Blond wrote the following works, some of which have been translated into German language, German. Jean-Charles De Borda
Jean-Charles, chevalier de Borda (4 May 1733 – 19 February 1799) was a French mathematician, physicist, and Navy officer. Biography Borda was born in the city of Dax to Jean‐Antoine de Borda and Jeanne‐Marie Thérèse de Lacroix. In 1756, Borda wrote ''Mémoire sur le mouvement des projectiles'', a product of his work as a military engineer. For that, he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1764. Borda was a mariner and a scientist, spending time in the Caribbean testing out advances in chronometers. Between 1777 and 1778, he participated in the American Revolutionary War. In 1781, he was put in charge of several vessels in the French Navy. In 1782, he was captured by the English, and was returned to France shortly after. He returned as an engineer in the French Navy, making improvements to waterwheels and pumps.
