Atmore station is a former train station in Atmore, Alabama. It formerly served Amtrak's '' Sunset Limited'' line. It has been closed since 2005, after Amtrak stopped service of the ''Sunset Limited'' east of New Orleans due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Atmore, Alabama
Atmore is a city in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. It was incorporated in 1907. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 8,391. Atmore is in the planning stages to increase its economic base with additions in its new Rivercane development along the I-65 corridor. Atmore has completed requirements to be recognized as an Alabama Community of Excellence at the upcoming Alabama League of Municipalities Convention. City officials are also working with the Alabama Historical Commission to have the downtown district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ''Sunset Limited'' is an Amtrak passenger train that for most of its history has operated between New Orleans and Los Angeles, over the nation's second transcontinental route. However, up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it operated between and Los Angeles, and 1993–96, continued on to Miami (via the ''Silver Meteor''s route). It is the oldest continuously operating named train in the United States, introduced in 1894 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and acquired by Amtrak upon its formation in 1971. The ''Gulf Breeze'' was a daily passenger train operated by Amtrak between New York City and Mobile, Alabama, as a section of the ''Crescent''. The two trains split in Birmingham, with the ''Gulf Breeze'' serving an additional seven stations in Alabama on a route south to the Gulf Coast. Service ran from 1989 until 1995. History Amtrak introduced the ''Gulf Breeze'' on October 27, 1989 as a section of the ''Crescent'' (New York City–New Orleans).
