The Atlanta Thrashers were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta. Atlanta was granted a franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL) on June 25, 1997, and became the League's 28th franchise when it began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, 1999–2000 season. They were members of the Southeast Division (NHL), Southeast Division of the NHL's Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference, and played their home games at what is now known as Philips Arena, State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta. Southeast Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Southeast Division was formed in 1998 as part of the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference due to expansion. The division lasted for 14 seasons (not including the cancelled 2004–05 NHL season, 2004–05 season) until 2013. The division was intended to group teams primarily in the Southeastern United States. Its original members were the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals. The expansion Atlanta Thrashers joined the division in 1999. True North Sports and Entertainment Limited (TNSE or TNS&E) is a Canadian company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, that owns and operates Canada Life Centre in downtown Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. The company also owns the Jets' minor league affiliate, the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. Aside from hockey, TNSE is also involved in real estate with True North Square, and are active in bringing concerts and other acts to Winnipeg. Quebec Rafales
The Quebec Rafales (French for "wind gust") were a minor professional ice hockey team located in Quebec City, Quebec. The team played two seasons in the International Hockey League before folding in 1998. History The franchise was started in Atlanta, Georgia as the Atlanta Knights. David Berkman, a real-estate mogul, had hopes of one day owning an NHL franchise. He used the mass southern expansion of ice hockey in the 1990s to further his goal and founded the Knights in 1992. The team played out of the Omni Coliseum, the former home of the Atlanta Flames and was able to use the large building to achieve a good deal of success. The Atlanta Knights were a minor league professional ice hockey team in the International Hockey League (1945–2001), International Hockey League from 1992 to 1996. The International Hockey League (IHL) was a minor professional ice hockey league in the United States and Canada that operated from 1945 to 2001. Atlanta Flames
The Atlanta Flames were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum and were members of the West and later Patrick divisions of the National Hockey League (NHL). Along with the New York Islanders, the Flames were created in 1971 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival World Hockey Association (WHA).
