Athol (Simpsonville, Maryland)
Located in the Simpsonville area of Columbia in Howard County, Maryland, United States, Athol Plantation. Reverend James Macgill of Scotland, built the plantation house on lands patented in 1730. The stone house was constructed by masons brought from his homeland stating in 1732, and was completed in 1740. A square cupola and porch were added in the 19th century, and later removed. In 1866 the house was the residence of Richard Gambrill MacGill. From 1927 to 1946 the Melvin Coar family occupied the house. Simpsonville, Maryland
Simpsonville is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. History People and nature have long flourished beside the Middle Patuxent River. Over 12,000 years ago, Native Americans hunted deer and gathered acorns and other wild food in the woods and waters. People from Woodland Indian cultures settled nearby approximately 2,000 years ago, leaving traces of their lives in the earthenware pottery and stone tools they left behind. In 1741, John Hobbs acquired the patent on the lands around Simpsonville. The land passed to Rachel Worthington in 1789, followed by Richard Owings in 1796. The early 19th century Simpsonville Mill water-powered grist mill and saw mill was built here, as well as a woolen factory, wheelwright shop, blacksmith shop, and nine houses. Atholton, Maryland
Atholton is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal office operated from May 26, 1897, to November 1900 and again from 1903 to July 1917. Atholton was founded at the crossroads of Old Columbia Pike, Guilford Road and Clarksville Pike. Atholton takes its name from a land grant named "Athole" granted from King Charles to James Macgill 17 August 1732. He built a nearby manor house named "Athol" built between 1732 and 1740. In 1845, Nicolas Worthington freed seventeen of his slaves, and gave them of the "Athol enlarged" land which was then called "Freetown". In 1869, the Atholton Colored Church was founded and renamed to the Locust Chapel (Locust United Methodist) between 1871 and 1876. Christ Church Guilford
The Christ Church Guilford, historically known as the "Old Brick Church," is an historic Episcopal church located about one mile from Guilford, now part of Columbia, in Howard County, Maryland. The small Georgian church was completed in 1809. It was constructed of handmade brick laid in English garden wall brick bond with unmarked joints. The oldest artifact used by the church is a bible published in 1701 provided by Queen Anne. The original church was established in 1727 as Queen Caroline Parish Church. Trinity Church (Elkridge, Maryland), grew out of Christ Church. The structure replaced a ca1711 log frame building and is the second church building to be built on the plot deeded to the parish in 1738 by Caleb Dorsey.
