Athletics is one of the sports at the quadrennial Lusophone Games ( pt, Jogos da Lusofonia) competition. It featured at the inaugural edition in 2006, and also the second edition of the Games in 2009. In the 2009 Games, the half Marathon event was replaced by the 10,000 metres road race. Fernanda Ribeiro
Maria Fernanda Moreira Ribeiro, GCIH (; born 23 June 1969), is a long-distance runner born in Penafiel, Portugal. The pinnacle of her career was at the 1996 Summer Olympics when she won the women's 10000 m gold medal, establishing a new Olympic record of 31:01.63. Her victory gave Portugal its third Olympic gold medal. Biography Ribeiro started running with Grupo Desportivo do Kolossal, before joining FC Porto, which she represented from 1982-1992. She returned to FC Porto after two years at Maratona Clube da Maia. Along with her sports career, she has worked at her town hall as a sports adviser to the mayor. The Athletics (sport), Athletics competition at the 2014 Lusophone Games took place at the GMC Athletic Stadium between 23 and 27 January 2014 in Bambolim, Goa State, India. The competition stood at a significantly lower level than the two previous editions. Arguably the strongest Lusophone nation, Brazil, did not send any competitors while Portugal only sent a few development athletes. Taking advantage of this situation, the host nation, India, topped the medal table. Most of their athletes were representatives of the state of Goa. São Tomé and Princípe was the only nation not to medal. 2014 Lusophone Games
The 2014 Lusophone Games was the 3rd edition of the Lusophone Games, a multi-sport event that represent athletes from Portuguese-speaking countries and territories. It was held from 18 to 29 January 2014 in the Indian state of Goa. Brazil and Sri Lanka also put in bids to stage the event. Participating delegations represented every Portuguese-speaking National Olympic Committee and other countries with historic ties to Portugal. The Chairman for these Games was Manohar Parrikar, the chief minister of Goa and the Chief Executive Officer was Keshav Chandra IAS, Secretary to the Government of Goa for Sports and Education. The Games were originally planned to be held in 2013, but was postponed and moved to the January 2014 dates. Since Goa was elected to host the games, Brazil chose not to send their athletes because of the ¨huge postponement¨ of the competition. Athletics At The 2009 Lusophony Games
The Athletics competition at the 2009 Lusophone Games was held in the Estádio Universitário de Lisboa on 12,13 and 19 July 2009. Brazilian medalists Jorge Sena, Bruno Barros, Lucimar Teodoro, Luciana França, Lucimara da Silva, Fernanda Gonçalves, Josiane Tito were all later disqualified from their events as they failed their drug tests after systematic doping by their coach. The 2009 Lusophony Games was the 2nd Lusophony Games ( pt, 2.os Jogos da Lusofonia), a multi-sport event for delegations representing Portuguese-speaking National Olympic committees. It took place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11 to 19 July 2009. The Pavilhão Atlântico acted as the main venue, staging the opening ceremonies and the majority of the sporting events.
