Athletics At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on 17–19 August at the Beijing Olympic Stadium. Forty athletes from 28 nations competed. The event was won by Andrey Silnov of Russia, the nation's second victory (after 2000) in the men's high jump. Germaine Mason's silver was Great Britain's first medal in the event since 1996, and matched the nation's best-ever result. Silnov's countryman Yaroslav Rybakov won bronze, marking the first time since 1988 that a nation had two medalists in the men's high jump in the same Games. Reigning world champion Donald Thomas, who cleared 2.32 metres at Osaka 2007, finished in twenty-first place and failed to advance into the final round. Beijing Olympic Stadium
The National Stadium (), also known as the Bird's Nest (), is an 80,000-capacity stadium in Beijing. The stadium was jointly designed by architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron from Basel-based architecture team Herzog & de Meuron, project architect Stefan Marbach, artist Ai Weiwei, and CADG, which was led by chief architect Li Xinggang. The stadium was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It was used again in the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Alessandro Talotti
Alessandro Talotti (7 October 1980 – 16 May 2021) was an Italian high jumper. Biography Talotti finished fourth at the 2002 European Championships in Athletics and twelfth at the 2004 Olympic Games. He also competed at the 2003 World Championships, the 2005 European Indoor Championships, and the 2008 Olympic Games without reaching the final. Talotti was the Italian high jump champion in 2000 and 2004, out jumping Giulio Ciotti, Nicola Ciotti, and Andrea Bettinelli in those campaigns. His personal best jump was 2.30 metres, achieved in June 2003 in Florence, and which he thrice equalled thereafter. Martyn Bernard
Martyn John Bernard (born 15 December 1984 in Wakefield, United Kingdom) is a British athlete, competing in high jump. Bernard has won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and a bronze medal in the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships. In Osaka in 2007 he set an outdoor best of 2.29 in qualifying, and in the final after clearing 2.21 passed all the way up to 2.33, where he failed twice at 2.35. Raúl Spank
Raúl Roland Spank (born 13 July 1988, in Dresden) is a retired German athlete who specialised in the high jump. He competed on the world stage for the first time at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Athletics in Marrakesh. He finished seventh in the final, jumping a personal best of 2.11 metres. The following year he moved up to the junior level, taking part in the 2006 World Junior Championships. He finished the tournament in Beijing with another personal best of 2.23 m, ending up in fifth place. In February 2008 he improved his indoor best to 2.26 m and further improvement came outdoors later that year at his first Olympic Games. Charles Austin (high Jumper)
Charles Allen Austin (born December 19, 1967) is an American athlete who won the gold medal in the men's high jump at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2012. Currently, Charles and Javier Sotomayor are the only two high jumpers that have won gold medals in the Olympics, Outdoor World Championships, Indoor World Championships and World Cup Championships.
