Athletics At The 1995 European Youth Summer Olympic Days
The athletics competition at the 1995 European Youth Summer Olympic Days was held from 10 to 13 July. The events took place at the University of Bath, United Kingdom. Boys and girls born 1978 or 1979 or later participated 27 track and field events, divided equally between the sexes with the exception of 3000 metres, 2000 metres steeplechase and pole vault for boys but not girls. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. Mindaugas Pukštas (born 3 August 1978) is a Lithuanian former marathon runner. He represented his nation Lithuania at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and later became an All-American in cross-country racing as a member of the track and field team for Oklahoma State University, under head coach Rene Sepulveda, while studying at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, United States. Before he retired from his athletic career in 2006 to pursue volunteer coaching for his alma mater's track and field squad, Pukstas ran a career best in 2:12:52 to win his first and only title at the Eurasia Marathon in Istanbul. Pukstas qualified for the men's marathon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, by finishing third and registering an A-standard entry time of 2:14.59 from the Motorola Marathon in Austin, Texas. Boris Aleksandrovich Gorban (russian: Борис Александрович Горбань; born 26 September 1978) is a Russian athlete who ran in the 400 metres hurdles. Gorban won the silver medal in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2001 World Indoor Championships, establishing a national record of 3:04.82 minutes together with teammates Aleksandr Ladeyshchikov, Ruslan Mashchenko and Andrey Semyonov. Mark Rowlands (born 1962) is a Welsh writer and philosopher. He is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Miami, and the author of several books on the philosophy of mind, the moral status of non-human animals, and cultural criticism. He is known within academic philosophy for his work on the animal mind and is one of the principal architects of the view known as vehicle externalism, or the extended mind, the view that thoughts, memories, desires and beliefs can be stored outside the brain and the skull.
