Dave Bailey (athlete)
David George Bailey (March 17, 1945 – August 27, 2022) was a Canadian track and field athlete, and subsequently a recognized pharmacologist, who pioneered the research of grapefruit–drug interactions. Athletic career Bailey represented Canada at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the men's 1,500 metres. He was the first Canadian to run the mile in less than 4 minutes (3:59.1) in San Diego, CA on June 11, 1966 and the first Canadian to run the mile in less than 4 minutes in Canada (3:57.7) in Toronto on July 22, 1967. A resident of North York, Ontario, he won the bronze medal in this event at the 1967 Pan American Games and the silver medal in this event at the 1967 World University Games. Jouko Kuha
Jouko Santeri Kuha (born 30 September 1939 in Ranua) is a Finnish former long-distance runner, who specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase. In 1968 he broke the World record with a result of 8:24.2. Career Kuha's international breakthrough was at the Finland-Sweden athletics international in 1965 when he beat Bengt Persson with the Finnish record of 8:37.6. In the same year he was ranked ninth at the annual ranking of Track and Field News. At the 1966 European Championships in Budapest Kuha ran a new Finnish record of 8:36.2 in the heats, but did not qualify for the final. Kuha realized that in order to reach the world's top he would be forced to leave Finland's winter conditions and conduct his training in warmer climates. He was the first Finnish runner to train in foreign countries, thus becoming a trendsetter for later Finnish runners who had success in the 1970s. John Sherwood (athlete)
John Sherwood (born 4 June 1945 in Selby, West Riding of Yorkshire, England) is a male retired United Kingdom, British athlete. Athletics career Sherwood won the bronze medal in the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 for the 400 m hurdles. His time was 49.03 seconds, and he was third behind fellow British athlete David Hemery, who took gold, and German Gerhard Hennige (silver). The commentator, David Coleman, who in his great excitement after Hemery won, made the rather unfortunate remark "who cares who's third - it doesn't matter!" It was an early example of so-called Colemanballs. Sherwood also won a silver medal in the European Athletics Championships in 1969 and a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in 1970. Ron Whitney
Ronald Howard "Ron" Whitney (born October 5, 1942) is a retired American hurdler and sprinter. Known for his fast finish, he was sixth in the 400 m hurdles at the 1968 Summer Olympics. He had entered the race as one of the favorites, having been ranked #1 in the world in 1967 and winning the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the event for the second time earlier that year. At the Olympics, his first heat victory established a new Olympic record, only to be surpassed by David Hemery two days later. Previously he had been the Pan American Games champion in the same event. While working on his master's degree at Colorado State University, he was the 1967 Gold Medalist at the World University Games. Eddy Ottoz (born 3 June 1944) is an Italian former athlete and bronze medalist at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 110 metre hurdles. Biography Sport career Ottoz competed for Italy in the Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics, 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan, and in the Athletics at the 1968 Summer Olympics, 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City, Mexico where he won the bronze medal in the 110 metre hurdles event.
