Atherton Farmstead
The Atherton Farmstead is a historic farm property at 31 Greenbush Road in Cavendish, Vermont. The farmhouse, built in 1785, is one of the oldest in the rural community, and is its oldest known surviving tavern house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Description and history The Atherton Farmstead is located in rural northeastern Cavendish, at the junction of Tarbell Hill and Greenbush Roads. The farm property is , including more than located on the west side of Tarbell Hill Road. The farm building complex is accessed via a drive at the junction of the two roads. The main house is a -story Cape style wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof, central chimney, and clapboard siding. The interior retains original period Federal style finishes. North of the main house stands a 19th-century barn, with an early 20th-century carriage shed set near Greenbush Road south of the house. Cavendish, Vermont
Cavendish is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. The town was likely named after William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire. The population was 1,392 at the 2020 census. The town of Cavendish includes the unincorporated villages of Cavendish and Proctorsville. History Early settlers Captain John Coffeen, the town's first permanent settler, brought his family and possessions into the wilderness of Cavendish in June 1769. They built a dwelling in the northern part of town on what is now E. I. Heald's farm, on the lot still called the "Coffeen pasture". The Coffeens remained the only family in Cavendish for two years. In the early 1780s, Leonard Proctor and Salmon Dutton came from Massachusetts and gave their names to the two major settlements on the Black River, Proctorsville and Duttonsville. Crown Point Road
The Crown Point Road, or the Crown Point Military Road, is a historic road built in 1759-60, mostly in what is now the United States state of Vermont. It was built by British Army and colonial militia forces to connect Fort Crown Point near the southern end of Lake Champlain to the Fort at Number 4 in what is now Charlestown, New Hampshire. It was the first major road in Vermont, spurring development along its route after the French and Indian War. Fragments of the road are still visible in largely period condition, or have been paved over, while others have disappeared into the forest. Sections of the road located in Weathersfield have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lizzie Aiken
Lizzie Aiken (1817–1906) was a nurse in the American Civil War, who was widely known as "Aunt Lizzie". Early life and family Eliza Atherton, known as "Lizzie", was born in the town of Auburn, New York in 1817. The daughter of Steadman Atherton (1791-1856) and Deborah Ward. Both her parents were from Cavendish, Vermont. In 1826, at the age of nine, the family returned to the Atherton Farmstead in Cavendish, which was owned by her grandfather, Jonathan Atherton. When she was sixteen, her mother became ill and Lizzie spent the next four years caring for her. Once her mother's health improved, she enrolled in the New England Academy in Cavendish. Personal life In 1837, ages 20, she married Cyrus Aiken, nine years her senior, and they honeymooned in Boston.
