Athanasius, Metropolitan Of Moscow
Athanasius (; real name – ''Андрей'', or Andrei) (early 16th century – 1570s) was the Metropolitan of Moscow and all Rus' from March 1564 to May 1566. He was the eleventh Metropolitan in Moscow to be appointed without the approval of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as had been the norm. Early life In 1530s–1540s, Athanasius served as a priest in Pereslavl-Zalessky. In 1549–1550, he was appointed archpriest of the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the Moscow Kremlin and became Ivan the Terrible's personal confessor. Athanasius accompanied the tsar during his military campaign against Kazan in 1552 and held a service during the laying of the foundation stone of the Annunciation Cathedral in that city. He was known as a writer and icon painter. Athanasius participated in the church sobors of 1553 and 1554 as a witness with regards to the restoration of icons and frescos in the Kremlin cathedrals after the fire of 1547. Fresco (plural ''frescos'' or ''frescoes'') is a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly laid ("wet") lime plaster. Water is used as the vehicle for the dry-powder pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall. The word ''fresco'' ( it, affresco) is derived from the Italian adjective ''fresco'' meaning "fresh", and may thus be contrasted with fresco-secco or secco mural painting techniques, which are applied to dried plaster, to supplement painting in fresco. Metropolitan German
Archbishop Herman, born Grigory Sadyrev-Polev in Staritsa, was an archbishop of Kazan from 1564 to 1567, and later a candidate for the Metropolitan of Moscow. He died on November 6 1567 in Moscow and was buried in the Church of Saint Nicholas the Hospitable. He was the twelfth Metropolitan in Moscow to be appointed without the approval of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as had been the norm. Biography Herman took monastic vows in Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. Here he served under Hegumen Guriy, who would become the first archbishop of Kazan, and was engaged in copying books. Upon organizing his congregation in Kazan, St. Guriy called for Herman and appointed him head of Bogoroditsky Monastery in Sviyazhsk. The Russian Orthodox Church attached great importance to this monastery in terms of spreading Christianity among the non-Russians in the Kazan region. The policy included mass repression of the boyars (Russian aristocrats), including public executions and confiscation of their land and property. Chudov Monastery
The Chudov Monastery (russian: Чу́дов монасты́рь; more formally known as Alexius’ Archangel Michael Monastery) was founded in the Moscow Kremlin in 1358 by Metropolitan Alexius of Moscow. The monastery was dedicated to the miracle (''chudo'' in Russian) of the Archangel Michael at Chonae (feast day: ). The Monastery was closed in 1918, and dismantled in 1929. The construction of the monastery together with its ''katholikon'' (cathedral) was finished in 1365. The katholikon was replaced with a new one in 1431 and then once again in 1501–1503. It was traditionally used for baptising the royal children, including future Tsars Feodor I, Aleksey I and Peter the Great. ''The Book of Degrees of the Royal Genealogy'' (Степенная книга) was the first official work of historiography produced in the nascent Tsardom of Russia. It was commissioned by Macarius, Metropolitan of Moscow from Ivan the Terrible's personal confessor, Andrew, in 1560.
