Atantano Shrine
The Atantano Shrine is a historic commemorative marker near Piti, Guam. It is a pyramidal structure of coral limestone and concrete, about in height, with base dimensions of . It is topped by a wooden cross and protected by an open concrete shelter. The monument was built in at least three stages, the early stages acting as bases for the mounting of the later ones. Panels on three sides carry inscriptions. The oldest inscription marks the initial construction of the road between Piti and Agat under the governorship of Don Felipe Cerain in 1784–85. The second inscription commemorates the creation of rice fields in the area under by Governor Don Francisco Villabos in 1832–34, and the third marks the reconstruction of the coast road during the governorship of Edward John Dorn in 1908–09. Guam Highway 1
Guam Highway 1 (GH-1), also known as Marine Corps Drive, is one of the primary automobile routes in the United States territory of Guam. It runs in a southwest-to-northeast direction, from the main gate of Naval Base Guam in the southwestern village of Santa Rita in a northeasterly direction to the main gate of Andersen Air Force Base in the village of Yigo. It passes through Guam's capital, Hagåtña, as well as intersecting other territorial highways. The highway runs through tropical forest, urbanized commercial areas, and residential neighborhoods. The US military upgraded and extended the road starting in 1941. Construction ceased with the Japanese invasion in December 1941 and resumed after the Second Battle of Guam in 1944. Guam Highway 2 is one of the primary automobile routes in the United States territory of Guam. Route description The route runs in a south to north direction, from the Magellan Monument in the southern community of Umatac in a general northward direction to the community of Santa Rita, where it meets Highway 2A (which connects to Guam Highway 1 Marine Corps Drive) and Gate 2 of Naval Base Guam. Piti, Guam
Piti is a Villages of Guam, village located on the central west coast of the United States territory of Guam. It contains northern and eastern coastlines of Apra Harbor, including Cabras Island, which has the commercial Port of Guam and the island's largest power plants. Piti was a pre-Spanish Chamorro people, CHamoru village and, after Spanish colonization, became the primary port town on Guam. The town was largely destroyed during the 1944 Battle of Guam (1944), liberation of Guam and the population relocated during the wartime construction of Apra Harbor. Edward John Dorn
Edward J. Dorn (January 12, 1854 – December 10, 1937) was a captain in the United States Navy. Early life On January 12, 1854, Dorn was born in Potosi, Wisconsin. Education In June 1874, Dorn graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Career In June 1887, Dorn was promoted to a Lieutenant. Dorn was court-martialed in 1895 for an incident involving the death of a gunner on . In 1901, Dorn was briefly acting-Commandant (and therefore acting-Governor) of American Samoa while Commandant Benjamin Franklin Tilley was away on leave. On 20 April 1904, Captain Edward John Dorn took command of USS Castine. Based in part on this experience, he was appointed as the Governor of Guam on December 28, 1907 and remained there until November 5, 1910.
