Asón River
The Asón is a river in Northern Spain, flowing through the Autonomous Community of Cantabria. Its source is in the Collados del Asón Natural Park. It flows into the Cantabrian Sea in the town of Colindres, where it forms the Santoña estuary which is the most important Special Protection Area in the north of Spain. It has a length of 39 km. Cantabria
Cantabria (, also , , Cantabrian: ) is an autonomous community in northern Spain with Santander as its capital city. It is called a ''comunidad histórica'', a historic community, in its current Statute of Autonomy. It is bordered on the east by the Basque autonomous community (province of Biscay), on the south by Castile and León ( provinces of León, Palencia and Burgos), on the west by the Principality of Asturias, and on the north by the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay). Collados Del Asón Natural Park
Collados del Asón Natural Park ( es, Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón) is a natural park that includes parts of the Asón River, Cantabria, Spain. It was declared as a Natural Park by Cantabria on 18 February 1999. It is located in the Cantabrian Mountains in the southeast of Cantabria, with an area of 4,740 ha, of which 4020 ha belongs to the municipality of Soba and 720 ha are private land. Its altitude ranges between 240 and 1,632 m above sea level. It is characterized by limestone outcrops, small beech forests, and unique Cantabrian holm oaks, together with manmade meadows for livestocks. Colindres
Colindres is a town in the northern Spanish province and autonomous community of Cantabria. Located between the cities of Santander and Bilbao, Colindres has a population of 8,453 (INE 2018). Overview In Colindres, the Asón River flows into the Cantabrian Sea, forming the Santoña estuary, which is the most important SPA in northern Spain, which is also known as the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park, which Colindres is a part of. The town has the second fishing port in the region. Santoña
Santoña is a town in the eastern coast of the autonomous community of Cantabria, on the north coast of Spain. It is situated by the bay of the same name. It is from the capital Santander. Santoña is divided into two zones, an urban plain, and a mountainous area, with Mount Buciero at its eastern limit, and Brusco and the beach of Berria to the north. The beach of San Martin comprises its south limit and the fishing harbor and marsh area its western limit. In August 1719 the town was successfully attacked and captured by French forces supported by the British Royal Navy during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. Extensive naval supplies were seized or destroyed, and along with the Duke of Berwick's simultaneous taking of San Sebastian, put pressure of Philip V to make peace which he subsequently did at the Treaty of The Hague. A Special Protection Area (SPA) is a designation under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. Under the Directive, Member States of the European Union (EU) have a duty to safeguard the habitats of migratory birds and certain particularly threatened birds. Santoña, Victoria And Joyel Marshes Natural Park
The Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park is an estuary in Cantabria, protected as a natural park. It is one of the wetlands of most ecological value in the north of Spain, and is used as a winter refuge and migratory passage by many species of birds and fishes.
