Astro Boy (film)
''Astro Boy'' is a 2009 computer-animated superhero film loosely based on the Astro Boy, manga series of the same name by the Japanese writer and illustrator Osamu Tezuka. Produced by the Hong Kong-based company Imagi Animation Studios, it was directed by David Bowers (director), David Bowers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Timothy Harris (writer), Timothy Hyde Harris. The film stars Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucas, Bill Nighy, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland, Charlize Theron, and Nicolas Cage. The film was first released in Hong Kong on October 8, 2009, and in the United States on October 23, 2009. It received generally mixed reviews from film critics and was a box office bomb, financial failure, earning worldwide against its budget. David Bowers (director)
David Bowers (born 1970) is an English animator, film director, screenwriter and voice actor. Early life Bowers studied fine art at Chester School of Art and animation at West Surrey College of Art and Design. His first job was on ''Who Framed Roger Rabbit'', as an inbetweener, under director Richard Williams. Career After ''Roger Rabbit'', Bowers worked at Cosgrove Hall on the cult favourite television shows '' Danger Mouse'' and '' Duckula'' before moving to London to work for Steven Spielberg's Amblimation studio. He worked as an animator on '' An American Tail: Fievel Goes West'', before going freelance to work on advertisements and features. Kadokawa Daiei Studio, formerly is the film division of the Japanese company the Kadokawa Corporation. is the name given to the recurring characters in manga created by manga artist Osamu Tezuka. Throughout his career, Tezuka frequently re-used the same characters in different roles across series; for example, the character Shunsaku Ban appears as a detective in ''Metropolis'' and as Astro Boy's teacher in ''Astro Boy''. The name alludes to the Hollywood practice of the star system, and can be seen as analogous to film directors who work with the same actors across multiple movies; Tezuka joked about how much his characters were paid, and occasionally based them on famous western actors. Astro Boy, known in Japan as , is a fictional superhero and the protagonist of the eponymous franchise. Created by Osamu Tezuka, the character was introduced in the 1951 ''Captain Atom'' manga.
